Tensegrity, a portmanteau of "tension" and "integrity", coined by Buckminster Fuller, also known as floating compression by Kenneth Snelson, utilizes compressed components within a perpetually tensile net so the compressed struts never touch as the cables spatially delineate the structure.
Buckminster Fuller, one of the greatest promoters of new ideas, alternative solutions, and different approaches thinking about our world.

"Uchronia" was an art project at Burning Man 2006 by a team of Belgians (thus it's nickname became "The Belgian Waffle"). It was a marvel to behold and dance under and around. See the comments for more videos about this structure and the Burning Man Temple. Good times.
Kenneth Duane Snelson (1927-06-29 – 2016-12-22) was an American contemporary photographer and "tensegrity" sculptor of flexible and rigid components. Snelson preferred the descriptive term floating compression and had a falling out with Buckminster Fuller.
Karlis Johansons, a Soviet Latvian artist, a hundred years ago pioneered what Buckminster Fuller popularized as "tensegrity" before Kenneth Snelson was even born. (I wrote this WP article a few months ago.)
