The practice itself isn't necessarily illegal depending on the situation, like the nature of the work being performed, relationship between slave and owner, and whether the arrangement fits into numerous loopholes generously provided by the authorities, most notably the internship loophole as a furnished addendum to an education.

It was always, and it is until this day, legal in arab and african countries. Whites are the only ones that progressed pass that.
