2009? It's really essentially the same, all the major players were thriving then too. Try 1999. The wild west man. Computer people back then were like wizards. No web 2.0, things were less interactive. Also, just about everyone using it then was of more intelligence. Nowadays every regular jackoff uses it and thinks they're smart too.

I miss the days of BBS's, screaming fast 9600 baud and Legend Of The Red Dragon. Messing with Teachers by installing Back Orifice on unprotected school computers. War Dialers, Virus Creation Kits, Phreaking and messing with payphones - the entire 90's was a great time to be curious about computers. There are times I yearn for the Hiss and spit of a Modem.

I remember you had to surf the web from a dos prompt, gopher or something can't quite remember. You could find some reliable information then and not all the BS that's out there now.

ytmnd and canv.as

Before the whole 'Free speech means I can shit on everyone and they just have to allow me to do it'-era began it was a creative free-haven with self enforced moderation.

The global engagement center not swallowing every political forum it finds.

Porn was so much more "wholesome".

Individual designs on websites. And virtual flamewars, of course - you can go to jail now for that, never thought it would come this far.

The absence of fascist right wing troll bots, also the wit and wisdom of other humans.

Funny, I would say censorship of Leftwing shills and troll bots are far more rampant.

Club Penguin, I guess, and perhaps the old Simtropolis theme. I was so young that I don't remember much else from then!
