I often ask myself this whenever I'm feeling particularly nihilistic, it's hard to explain otherwise but it's basically this idea that we're too far gone as a society to ever improve and make change. There's a hivemind of popular opinions where those who follow them are not susceptible to change because they want to believe they're right. I think the problem doesn't just lie within communities such as Reddit but with society as a whole, a lot of people these days are narrow minded and would rather only listen to those who follow similiar beliefs they follow - and those who are open to debate argue for a side they're not willing to budge from. Anyone involved in these often walk out of one feeling the same way about a topic, and maybe slightly more annoyed than before.
It isn't just this aspect either, in general, I think it's safe to say that (personally) I've given up on a lot of things that most humans use to ground themselves with. Such as Moral Principles for example, at the end of the day this is used as a measurement to determine the good nature of somebody. But does any of it really even matter? At the end of the day, we can't avoid the fact that death is inevitable. Regardless of what we choose to do with our lives, how we treat others and what we believe in - sooner or later we will die, and that will be that. All the friends, bad memories, good memories, achievements - gone. Whatever legacy you leave behind will most likely be forgotten, and those that did care about you will be dead soon after too. Most people aren't open to talk about these type of topics and I can understand why, but for someone who is atheist and questions the point of whatever this existence is - I find it pretty interesting. I am also pretty depressed all the time, but I don't think my poor mental health should be used as a way to trivialize my beliefs. What I think has been the foundation of my thoughts for as long as I can remember, this is who I am. It isn't "my depression talking", as people like to believe.
There are a lot of people out there that would rather remain ignorant to such topics, as it can undoubtly cause a lot of unhappiness. I mean, it's why people find a religion or faith to believe in. I think the reason as to why there are so many people out there who think there is a God, is because whatever Religion they're hearing it from gives them structure to their lives. It gives them something to follow that 'keeps them in line' so to speak. As opposed to someone like me, who just follows the idea that "we're all fucked". I've had people come and go in my life that have tried to tell me otherwise, that "life is worth living" and use a mix of religion, nature and optimism in order to sway me away from these thoughts. I don't know, I guess I'm still here for a reason. I don't know why I am, and I don't know why I even bother to post these sort of things. From what I've seen, humans are generally just shallow creatures looking to 'up' everybody else. It seems that life is some sort of free-for-all, and the ones who are winning are the ones who are fucking everybody else over. I've had internet friends who didn't realise the significance they had in my life, and when they left it hurt me more than it did them. People don't really appreciate the presence of someone who genuinely cares for them until they leave, and by then it's too late. As a kid I had a group of friends, after 5 years of hardly any at all and now none. I think I've realised how important it is to keep those who love you around you often. I don't know, like I've said this is just who I am. Nothing will really change that.
Your friend, JC.
