Wow that's fascinating. Going fast probably breaks more muscle fibers and increases the effective resistance resulting in bigger gains? I'd never heard this advice for lifting before. It's probably bad for your joints though to jerk like that, right?

I doubt it would make much difference to your joint health as long as you warm up correctly before hand, and do the movement correctly
