Letsrun has an amazing discussion forum. The site must be around 20 years old now and there's more training advice in there than anyone could conceivably read. Maybe these sites tend to be sport-specific?

Thanks, I'll check it out. At first glance it seems to be mainly for young runners and discussing various off-topic stuff. Overall exercise forums do seem to be weirdly specific, like part of sites catering to young mothers or people who have had gastric surgery.

It's geared towards competitive running so there's a sizable hs/college crowd, but there are also a lot of coaches and former competitive athletes in there too. Definitely a lot of off-topic stuff but you can filter that out. If you're on the message board page, click the "currently viewing" drop-down menu in the upper left to get where you want.

I think it's because fit people tend not to be passionate about fitness, but about their specific athletic endeavors.
