I dunno. I think rocks stars often flirt with breaking gender norms. It's almost part of the shtick now. But I don't find it meaning much more than something in the sub culture. I recall grunge. The fans were not noticeably gender non conforming. And very much most of the bands were conforming anyway.

I think most people were conforming just as they were in the 80s or now to be honest. Gender non conformity is a minority thing in men and women. What "gender," the roles, the expression, the tropes means, changes over time. But it never goes away. It only varies within limits.

That's not what I experienced -- which is why I say it probably varies by region and culture.
