Because its basic respect. I use your preferred pronouns. You wouldn't like it if I referred to you as "he". Cox is no different.

When did basic respect come to include “denying your material perceptions to match the preferred self image a person wants?”

When I was growing up, basic respect was not using foul language, making eye contact, using titles like sir and mam, and not discussing contentious issues like money or religion at dinner.

Nobody was ever obliged to play a role in maintaining someone’s identity for them.
