From my quick skimming of the article it looks like they are simply giving you checkboxes for sexual orientation, and the options are male and female or both. Seems reasonable to me. No mention of any gender-identity craziness e.g. a slider between male and female or a checkbox for impregnable male, etc. So I don't see the problem. If this is really the hill you want to die on then I question your priorities.

What is odd is that Sims are inherently bi-sexual by default. Currently you can make them woohoo with either gender. This update is actually giving them the ability to make strictly heterosexual Sims, and they are complaining because they could also choose to make gay Sims or Sims that don't want any.
