Nearly 65,000 of us were on reddit's GenderCritical sub before the banwave, with more coming every day. They can delete the sub, but they can't shut us up.

I was not a mod. If you were a GC mod please message me here and on reddit. I make no claims to have been a mod over there, but I was so worried this day would come. To all the women I met on GC, it was amazing having open conversations with you, and hopefully that day will come again soon.

My own partner posts pro trans stuff constantly. I told her I was depressed because Reddit banned 2000 subs today and I hate censorship. She asked why I hated censorship. And said well I'm sure they had a good reason what did they say? How do you know it was bad that they banned them? I had to change the subject. Like I said. I'm now super depressed.

Aw, I'm sorry. It's super hard when you disagree with your partner so fundamentally. I get it. I had a lot of arguments with my ex around the 2016 election about a lot of things.

My theory is subs like ours have a large membership but don't click on ads often? I know we're not one hivemind but it's been extremely rare that I've seen an ad I was remotely interested in... Because I'm not the target demo.

That's what happened in 2019-2020.

The Yaniv ballwaxing complaints first came to r/gc's attention in October 2018 when the Economist and GenderTrender referred to them. The British Columbia government put a publication ban but by then some papers had leaked and GT outed JY.

That happened on 11/9/2018. On 11/16, Wordpress shut GT down. On 11/18, the American Conservative magazine became the first, and one of very few, to talk directly about GenderTrender's shutdown. More press happened, and I chronicled all that. On 12/12, JY appeared before his City Council for LGBT+ funding for, I believe, hygiene products in schools. He also bragged that he had gotten Meghan Murphy banned from Twitter. That's the last I chronicled, because I got banned 12/18/18.

But yeah, what happened in 2019 was he'd go to the City Council every week. He declared he was a beauty pageant queen for Miss BC in March. He ended up eliminated but then showed up to take pictures of young girls with his mom in tow in May. When the pub ban went away in July, the Canadian and mainstream press started covering JY as did others. JY accepted invites from Alex Jones and was flattered that Trump Jr. wrote a bad tweet about him. He thought he was winning so he had a debate with Ms. Blaire White on livestream that got him arrested.

Me too. Browsing GC was my time of the day where I could read some sensible content and not feel like the entire liberal world had gone mad, being a left-leaning liberal myself. A major thing I liked about GC was that most people were respectful and that there were plenty of sane liberals there as well. I don't know if this place is overall a good thing (seeing as there's a video on the front page telling people to vote for Tr*mp) but at least GC is here. I'm older and I remember when gay people were mostly depicted as villains or at least completely one dimensional in television and movies. I remember very clearly when Matthew Shepard was murdered. There was a group who used to patrol the gayborhood in my city similar to the Guardian Angels in the 1990s. I grew up knowing that gay people were vulnerable historically, but as a woman I was never told en masse that they were in more danger than women as a group. It's like people who try to tell me that women's equality is "solved" now. Can't we agree that multiple groups have issues? This is so poisonous that we have to push back so hard instead of working together.

There is a lot written about how the transformation of Europe from feudalism into either mercantilism or capitalism came with a change in the arts and culture. I think in hindsight it was an attempt to re-write history and cut off the past from the present. I think if people who are talking about "late stage capitalism" are right, then it is time to erase the past from the present. People using old definitions, like "woman", are being made obsolete by the social engineers. It was never about "hate", but I wonder what the world will look like when the obsolete realize what is going on.

I think that's one of the reasons the MRA/TRA got a foothold so easily. Liberally political radical feminists trusted the left to have our backs and the moment men wanted something they shoved a knife in it.

I just joined Reddit for the first time a week and a half ago for GC after the JKR thing and WTF. Is this in any way normal? That a sub would get banned without even warning the mods? I have still been reading through all of the information and had really been nervous to talk to my less progressive friends and family about gender ideology because I didn’t want to make them actually transphobic or judgmental (I live in a decent sized city in a red state and they probably don’t really know about any of what is being argued for right now) but it looks like I need to get over that concern. Guess the time for easing myself in is over.

Spinster is great and I recommend every user here to create an account also on that site, but imho we need another more open platform. A huge part of the reason r/GenderCritical grew as rapidly as it did, was because it was an open sub on a massive website and attracted a lot of curious people who simply ended up there randomly, or alternatively choosing to "hate-read" it after hearing a lot of negative comments and ultimately changing their mind. We need to create something similar. Gender critical websites are crucial (especially if a similar purge was to ever occur), but we need to reach out to new people - not (only) those who already share our point of view, or else all we have is a tiny echo chamber.

I don't think this place is safe long-term. last night the GC mods were sure they weren't gonna get kicked off because they'd followed the rules on reddit too. They've been getting better, but look at the way the admins treated people. I kind of agree, it is only a matter of time until the TRAs try to infiltrate the administration of this platform as well, and from then on anything could happen (as we just saw on Reddit). However, I don't think it is a reason to give up on the fight, the more people we reach and the more people see the censoring attempts, the more people we have the chance to wake up. We need sites like these, aside from our own.

We can sorta learn from the last purge. A lot of actually disgusting subs were banned, they tried to evade, and eventually moved to voat. Those who really liked the banned subs stayed around. The casual visitor made an account, complained about reddit administration, then ultimately went back to reddit after a few weeks cause all the other communities are still there. The admins there seem to realise that getting rid of reddit refugees means losing a lot of site traffic when you are trying to compete with something that big.

They censor less than reddit so far but they do censor. I don't think this is a safe place to build long-term but I don't expect them to kick us off too soon. Some subs have been banned in the past, though this list is incomplete.

I, too, was a lurker, and only posted once on the main GC sub. After the ban, I deleted my account. There was nothing hateful about GC. Seeing some of the articles posted was ENLIGHTENING (the opposite of hateful). Informing people/women of events and activities against women is NOT hateful. Banning a sub meaning to inform and be a place of discussion for such topics, though...

Well, true colors were shown today. Now, even us lurkers come out of our closets. :)

I was STUNNED when I woke up from a nap after work, logged onto Reddit, and saw that GC had been banned, along with many of our sister subs (well, I shouldn't say 'our'... I was just a lurker! LOL). I deleted both of my reddit accounts, and feel such a connection to my new username here. This ban only helped me affirm that what I did earlier this year was right: I had a friendship with someone who came out as trans that ended 2.5 months ago over differences of opinion.

I've had a hard time moving on, but, like all bad times (and I know this banning was), we must all move on. Good things can come of this, even if the road is a rocky one. Stay strong, all!

I'm not upset because I'm not surprised. Reddit following an anti-women agenda? That's pretty much what I expect from Reddit and Spez.
Frankly, I believe this is just another nail in the coffin for Reddit. More bans, more people leave. In come people with nothing more interesting to post than "happy cake day" and rehash memes along with bots spreading fake news and propaganda. Reddit going away isn't imminent, but just like Facebook it's going to get less and less popular with the young crowd and fade.

It is what it is. I'm used to women's voices being silenced and erased. This won't change any opinions. What we need to do is to make this place visible so that we can get people who've peaked in here when they google. Be gender critical irl, without being rude. Be gender critical in social media, do it with tact with without resorting to insults, be polite but firm. And when people peak, bring them here.

GC lurker here. GC was a lifeline for me when my lefty-feminist "Can't we just be nice and all get along? And everyone just wants to pee in peace", view point clashed headlong into a trans individual in my life who set off a number of predatory red flags.

That along with women competing against trans identified men in sport sent me down the rabbit hole investigating what was going on and how it impacts women.

This community helped me critically evaluate my stance in feminism and evolve. I really love the women here and I'm glad the community is not lost.
