To the men of the ‘trans woman’ movement, being a woman is a form of slum tourism (also known as ghetto tourism or poverty tourism): members of a more economically and sociopolitically powerful class satisfy morbid curiosity about how the less fortunate live. This allows the more privileged to gain relief from the boredom and rigid expectations of their humdrum lives, as well as from the self-doubts plaguing their sense of worthiness.

It’s really not much different than the West’s view of Islam. It’s called Orientalism, which is a form of colonization and cultural appropriation. It implies both exploitation and tourism or emotional distance from the lives being observed, collected, and raised up as trophies. The mystery of the Orient and Orientals, and plumbing the mystery of women. The eternal woman question, and the eternal Oriental question. Neither ever to be solved, of course.

I am genuinely interested by what this means - I have not educated myself regarding Orientalism per se, though I do know about "slum tourism" (I have a previous colleague who does this often and it's creepy and horrible). I'm just not understanding the point of Islam here, if you have time, could you clarify a bit?

It's a major form of colonialism. Best to read the classic Edward Said"s "Orientalism." Or read a substantial review of it. Or examine how European art has depicted the East? (similar to how it has viewed women--picturesque curiosities, erotic. mysterious etc)

If you google Linda Nochlin: "The Imaginary Orient" you'll find this article (PDF) under wordpress etc. She's an excellent art historian and critic.

This is exactly how natal women feel. s/

UK-based Junio Birch, whose ‘Alien Queen’ beauty routine has earned the self-described “sculptor, transwoman” a 348k-strong following on Instagram,

sees ‘woman’ as a form of stress relief, an escape from reality.

Classic AGP.

In the video he says "Cis women can do drag."

From an article on him on Dazed. Title is "Juno Birch makes an art out of taking the piss"  because I won't post the link. Two quotes: < I love Stepford Wives because all the women are robots underneath, and the thing with robots is they are artificial and they’ve built themselves, and that’s how I feel a lot of the time. Like, I’ve built my own body by taking pills and having surgery, so I associate with characters like that.”>

<In one piece, aptly titled “Human Groceries”, the stubbled women don stylish hairdos and teeter in a supermarket, bare-chested in six-inch heels. It’s a great example of how Birch simultaneously embraces and pokes fun at what it means to be a woman. She laughs when asked about the message behind the piece: “They’re alien women who are doing their grocery shopping (but) not picking up the vegetables, which are a necessary thing. They’re picking up the boobs and craving more femininity. >

Yes, it shows breasts in the shopping cart. I'm supposed to say live and let live, but men like this view woman as a costume, and I'm just not ok with that.

women are just robots underneath and they artificial and they built themselves

That is some extreme form of sexism: "Men are human, but women are just robots, they are only pretending to be humans, I feel like pretending too, so I am a woman".

This is why, sex robots.

This is an excellent text. I absolutely agree. Transgenderism is an invasion. It is colonization. And it's such a white savior narrative, only re-branded for the 21st century.
