The Effects of Self-ID in Norway

Hi all,

I am a GC/radical feminist from Finland and have a few questions about the effects self-identification has had in Norway.

The Finnish legislators are currently preparing a proposal for reforming the law regarding the legal recognition of the gender identity of transgender people. So far, the law here states that in order to be legally recognised as a member of the opposite sex, a transgender person must be 'sterile'. This demand has been lobbied as being against human rights by Finnish trans activists, so much so that even Amnesty and other international organisations have criticised it. The current law basically means that a transgender person must have medically transitioned in some way, for instance used cross-sex hormones for some months. Trans-identified people have the right to receive fertility treatments within the Finnish public health care system and to spare their eggs or sperm in case they wish to have children after their medical transition. They do not have to receive surgical treatments (the removal of gonads) as a part of the process. What I mean to say here is that Finland does not in reality perform forced sterilisations on transgender people. (I personally find it quite outrageous and insulting towards the victims of forced sterilisations that Finnish trans activists even make this comparison in the first place.)

However, this demand for a medical transition is about to change since self-ID is very likely to be introduced in Finland in the new law. Our other legislation regarding women's spaces, for instance, is somewhat different to what it is in the UK or the US. Therefore, I'm curious about the situation in other Scandinavian countries, especially Norway since self-id has been put into practice there and their legal system and society is close to ours. So, if there are any Norwegian GC feminists or radfems here who have knowledge on the matter, please share it with me.

  1. What effects has the introduction of self-ID had in Norway? Have these effects been studied, or any statistics compiled about them?
  2. Were there any organisations (most preferably feminist ones) that were opposed to it?
  3. How was the public debate about this issue at the time?

There are a couple Norwegian feminists (IIRC) who are very outspoken on Twitter. We had a thread about it here towards the end of last year (?) Maybe if you search?

Other Finn here. The public "debate" about the issue in Finland seems very one-sided, and the media is partaking in it by framing it as a human rights issue. As if there are actual forced sterilisations taking place. As if it's a human rights violation that a person must undertake some kind of physical transition in order to change their legal sex marker. It would be interesting to know if the public debate in Norway was similar, and whether the law in Norway used to be similar to ours with regards to the sterility requirement.
