Does anyone know why there's no admin cover at Ovarit? Maybe the site admin is single-handedly running it these days?

[–]WrongToy[S] 12 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 0 fun13 insightful - 1 fun -  (23 children)

I suspect this is true and has been so for at least years as no other known mods have ever made an appearance. Given that at least half the new sub comes from r/gc, I find it puzzling that she wouldn’t assign an interim mod given the election and other things going on.

[–]soundsituationmeow 11 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

The timing is weird.

[–]arcticbasket 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I wonder if she just didn't have the time/energy to deal with a massive influx of election-related stuff.

[–]Feminist_Username 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I hope she is taking a damn vacation lol. Rest your eyes and your soul girl_undone

[–]Pennygadget 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I hope this is it and it's not a prelude to the site shutting down or being sold to someone else

[–]BiscuitDough 10 insightful - 4 fun10 insightful - 3 fun11 insightful - 4 fun -  (17 children)

Because then she might have to release her iron grip on the community and not micromanage the threads when us ladies get a little too uppity for her liking.

[–]WrongToy[S] 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

I’ve noticed what I consider as overmoderation, but what is more pressing is the decision to freeze the site especially at such a consequential time over the reported lack of mods. Here, we had automod put new users into mod approval. We removed this given the recent influx of ovarit users.

[–]Pennygadget 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

I get why she over-mods a bit. If she let's us get to uppity, use words like "troon", etc she risks losing server services for Ovarit. I don't think she has the resources that the Kiwi Farms owner has to fight back against a targeted campaign to shut down the site for "hate speech"

On the other hand, you're right about the timing being strange. I don't see why the election should be any more difficult to moderate than other controversial time periods (like the direct aftermath of October 7th or Harris replacing Biden as the nominee). Even the worst people on Ovarit are annoying at worst and not downright abusive or hateful.

[–]WrongToy[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Well, her moderation issues have gone beyond referencing t slurs. I posted Meghan Murphys comment saying fat women should not wear sundresses because it highlighted their “fat asses” and the admin deleted it. I’m really wondering about that one. I have a really hard time believing it’s about cloudflare or servers full of incels mocking women’s body shapes.

[–]Pennygadget 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I've also had my comments erased for fat jokes (mainly one about that NB chick on SNL) and jokes at the expense of a TIP's appearance. I'm guessing she doesn't want to make body shaming women a habit on the site? Or maybe it's a personal trigger for her?

In any case, there ought to be a middle ground between expecting us to behave like church ladies and letting Ovarit become a more girly version of Kiwi Farms. LOL

[–]WrongToy[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Well, in my case I was def not team Murphy and said so. I was appalled that comment came from a prize winning feminist in fact. Sundresses, esp the elastic ones, are generally comfy regardless of the woman’s ass shape.

It is no secret that when it comes to gc, republicans have been way more supportive. But that doesn’t mean we then emulate republicans or Dem men, who are just as bad, by making fun of female buttocks.

[–]carbon0va 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

We didn't have warning of the two examples you mentioned - those experiences may be why she chose to proactively shut down. Either way I hope we can talk about mod coverage, if that's really the constraint, when she reopens in a week-ish. We've got women here who would step up.

Also, hello everyone /wave

[–]Pennygadget 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

That's a good point. She couldn't see the shit storm coming from other major events. But she could proactively choose to sit out on the direct aftermath of the election

Again, I can't entirely blame her for it. I don't think I'd want to moderate ANY online space post election regardless of who wins

[–]WrongToy[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It’s actually not that traumatic. I mean, I’m doing it here. And if there were too few mods to handle post election activity, we’d just put out an open call for resumes via dm

[–]Feminist_Username 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

The rules are so the servers will host us at all

[–]Hedvvig 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I highly doubt the server cares if we're "civil" to each other. The admin there has the most suffocating rules I've ever experienced.

I've never felt more stifled, silenced, and forced to make myself smaller in a feminist space than on Ovarit.

Edit: she also clearly plays favorites. Some users get away with being HIGHLY uncivil, as long as they don't use any swear words. It's clear as day that some teacher's pets get to break the rules at will.

[–]Feminist_Username 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

All potentially fair criticisms. I feel defensive of her choices because I benefit from her work daily mostly for free besides the odd donation. Discord moves way too fast for me, tumblr's not my style, and spinster xyz seems to be defunct. Where else is there to go? It's painfully slow here.

[–]Pennygadget 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Same. She built a great, user-friendly site.

[–]soundsituationmeow 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Have you browsed the rest of the site? It's still slower than ovarit but there's a lot more here than just this sub: https://saidit.net/s/all

[–]Feminist_Username 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Yes it's boring and a sausage fest and too far right for me sorry, I don't fit in or feel like my perspective will be respected... Nor do I feel the need to impress my perspective upon what seems like a hostile and more frequently schizophrenic than gen pop crowd. It appeals as much as returning to reddit which is to say not at all

[–]Pennygadget 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Unfortunately, playing favorites will always be a problem when there is only one mod (even if she genuinely is trying to be unbiased, it can be hard to be 100% neutral). So I hope she eventually gets an assistant mod or two to help her out

[–]overthetop 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Ha! I was removed because I was having my posts removed for frivolous reasons, like being in the "wrong" category. Strangely, they all were related to RFK or Elon.

[–]3MistersAndAMissy 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I also think it’s too potentially toxic. Good for her

We have Twitter if we want to be nasty to others

[–]Iceni 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No idea. However, I am pretty sure some of us would volunteer our help if they needed it.

[–]flapsaidit 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (14 children)

It has been and is going to continue to be a very busy time on Ovarit and between one thing and another IRL we don’t have the womanpower to cover it all. -flapyourwings

[–]WrongToy[S] 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (12 children)

Fine but they could have covered this in a more effective way.

[–]flapsaidit 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

What do you think would be more effective?

[–]WrongToy[S] 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Out of the hundreds of ovarit users, no one was deemed suitable to interim mod for a couple of weeks?

[–]WrongToy[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

Enterprises are best run with multiple people. Even corner stores are better run with more than one person in charge. Someone or someone’s have given her a total of 185 this month, and those are the people most aligned with how she runs things as they are, presumably. Maybe start there and if not put out an on call mod call for familiar faces to fill in instead of, u know, shutting everything down.

[–]yuqi 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

This is what worries me. I think Ovarit has been under performing donation wise for a while. I’ve donated and this makes me wonder… we don’t have even the slightest backup plan? Having one singular person in control of it all seems unwise. I always thought it was a team, and thinking only one singular person has access to the entire thing is worrisome. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful it exists. But that seems short sighted at best. Everyone needs a break sometimes, every kind of forum with any significant user base is going to have some times when traffic is higher than others…

[–]Pennygadget 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

I don't begrudge her needing a break (especially with a contentious election going on). But I worry about these hiatuses becoming more frequent if she doesn't get more assistance

[–]Hedvvig 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

It's not like people aren't offering. There are clearly many qualified and vetted women who are offering to help out, but she's choosing not to accept help. Because then she'd have to loosen up her tyrannical micromanaging mod style and compromise with someone else's views on moderation, and that's never going to happen.

Don't feel bad for someone who actively scorns offers of help, and then subsequently collapses under the weight of it all. People want to help, she just won't accept it.

[–]BiscuitDough 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

She's pretty much said she hasn't promoted any new mods for the past few years because she didn't like some of the ones from when she opened the site. And that's just the circle mods. I don't know if there's any sitewide mods at all, but I don't think so.

I have moderated a large forum in the past, and I had put in my name several times to moderate a motherhood circle (I still think it's ridiculous that a women's focused forum doesn't have a space for mothers, but that's a tangent). But she'll claim that "no one wants to step up to do it" when people are discussing circles they would like to see. Which, okay you can't have a circle for every niche topic and you can't just promote anyone who throws their hat in, but there has literally been no attempts in years.

It's disappointing, because I genuinely like the idea of the site and I would love to see it do well. But the overmoderation is insane that I basically don't post anything other than milquetoast comments or mild snark that I know will be received well. I hate opening a thread and seeing an entire comment tree of (deleted) and just wondering whose voices were erased and why. I guess it really helps make it feel like a true Reddit clone, though.

[–]soundsituationmeow 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Do you know what kind of comments/threads get deleted? I guess I usually arrive after the fact so I don’t even know what’s being removed. One nice thing about saidit is the public moderation logs.

[–]Pennygadget 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't want to judge her too harshly for the hiatus because we don't know if she's going through something IRL. But I hope this is a wake up call for her to accept some mod assistance

[–]Pennygadget 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I thought she had assistant mods. But I guess not? Or maybe they suddenly quit?

[–]Moutonelectrique 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Same, I thought there were more mods?

[–]thetomatoisred 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The site is strategically "down" around the time of the election so they can avoid the true reason for the problems within the Democratic party and avoid any political controversies, abortion issues and black women running around with machetes looking to scalp white women's heads all while "trans" people heavily monitor the site and take screenshots of the disaster.

Well well...haven't been here in...years. Time flies by.

Hi all!

Thanks...distressed that Ovarit is on hiatus.

[–]femfyratre 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Just saying hi. I'm glad some folks posted this sub in the comments over there because I completely forgot about it!

[–]Chaika 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Thanks. I've only lurked since r/gc got the banhammer as I was in the middle of a move and lots of craziness. But I read it every morning with coffee. Great that we can convene here in the interim.

Hi everyone. Long time since I've been here.

Thankfully the temporary shutdown will bring traffic here.

[–]soundsituationmeow 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's nice to see people back here. Also, I think this will be a better place to discuss the election.

[–]worried19 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Just checking in. I hope we don't have to go back to using this site permanently, but it's good as a temporary hangout.

I'm amazed it's still in such good shape. The debate sub kind of got taken over by spammers. There hasn't been genuine activity there in quite a while.

[–]WrongToy[S] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

I didn’t know there was a debate sub. Just as well as I’m not here to debate Tim’s lol

[–]worried19 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Well, we tried, but it was very hard to find trans posters. Can't really have a debate if the other side is missing.

I'm glad this place is still here. I remember it was a lifesaver in the early days after the Reddit subs were banned and before Ovarit was created.

[–]yuqi 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Doesn’t surprise me that they only want to debate when Reddit is making sure the opposing side is shut down

[–]worried19 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The debate sub on Reddit actually had a lot of trans posters. I was friends with several of them. They were upset about the sub being banned, too. We also had trans moderators, which is why it always pisses me off that we were banned for alleged "hate." It wasn't for hate, it was for wrongthink. Reddit didn't want our discussions to happen at all, no matter how many trans people were willing to engage with us.

I think the reason the debate sub over here eventually died is that very few of those regulars followed us over to Saidit, and we never did attract a new influx of trans posters. It's hard to get people to move over to a completely new site. I'm still upset about it. I feel like we had a lot of productive dialogue there, and I know at least one young trans-identified woman desisted due to our discussions.

Can't believe I'm back here. I got my invite code from girl undone on this forum!

I'm trying not to link up usernames, but I'm the weirdo who always thanks Gallus Mag for showing me the way. I remember thinking she was mean, 12 years ago...

now...yeah! (:

As usual, I likely won't post much, but I'm checking in.

[–]WrongToy[S] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Poor Gallup’s, taken done by Jonathan Yaniv. I think that started the trajectory of where we now are. The first outlet to cover her was the American Conservstive. That has been the pattern since. Hence, you do see more conservatives on ovarit.

[–]Gritobo 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It's nice to be able to actively participate with the terven since the fall of /r/GenderCritical. I do worry, however, that this may lead to Ovarit's fall. Hopefully it returns as planned.

[–]Feminist_Username 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Spinster xyz seems to be down too, anyone know why?

Well, weird to be back here.

Hello from Ovarit!

I finally just joined here from ovarit. Hi everyone.

I’m curious to find out how this website differs in vibe from ovarit.
