I admit I have not researched hydrogen in depth, and so I remain confused (and disturbed) by the need for water to make hydrogen

There are 22 litres of Hydrogen in ONE TABLESPOON of water. The earth is 2/3 water so there is no danger of running out. Desalination is expensive now but with renewables the cost will come down (see the middle east solar desalination projects)

Can you give us a summary of why hydrogen is a good choice for our energy needs?

Probably the best summary of global hydrogen projects is this PDF from Australia

Advancing Hydrogen: Learning from 19 plans to advance hydrogen from across the globe. This work is funded by the Future Fuels CRC, supported through the Australian Governments’ Cooperative Research Centres Program. 125 page PDF JULY 2019

Sorry for the late reply, busy with other stuff, and missed the post until today
