This is the really nice thing about OP. I never managed to disprove him.

So either he is a fucking genius, like I am, or I am delusional even off my meds.

Another subculture ruined by members of the public and sociopaths. Here's what happens, if you haven't read it yet: https://meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths

Barriers to entry are the key. Keep them high. Unfortunately, there are always idiots who want to invite in the entire world because that would be awesome! No. It's not awesome. Gatekeep the shit out of your subculture.

Can confirm, 1989 joiner here, it was so much better. We had netiquette.

Nah. Golden age of the internet was early to late 2000s when everyone had access but no one was censoring.

The barrier of entry to use it was to have internet (expensive) and a low-end system (expensive).

Now any idiot can get a free obama phone and leech off the wireless internet.

Everyone s here and the charm of the internet is now destroyed.

Not a big fan of building bridges to the past. At the end of the day, commerce ruins everything, case in point, the internet.

The internet was like the wild west, anything you could imagine. Once big brother and the shit for brains castrated it well look at reddit.

I was just lamenting how many NPCs had infested online spaces, making useless, pointless noises back and forth. And by that I mean I drunkenly abused them. They aren't completely useless, they can be punching bags.

I don't agree with every point this guy makes, but he's spot on with the gatekeeping. It isn't a bad word, that's how you maintain standards. You let everyone in and consider them equals ostensibly, and well, the lowest common denominator starts moving down.

Streaming media and smart devices I am totally for, however. Cable was awful. Having 4 OTA channels that went off at night was awful. Streaming whatever you want when you want is really cool.

And smart phones, well shit, what nerd doesn't want a computer they carry around with them all the time. I can't imagine going back to the days of being chained to a desktop computer.

This is so unbelievably simple to understand. Some people just don't cut it, for whatever activity or community in question. Golf was much better when it was upheld to a standard. It applies to every fiber of society.

Oddly enough, if I show up to these same peoples clubs that are filled with people who cry about gatekeeping, let's just say in the wrong Anime t-shirt, or with the wrong set of demon girl cards, or with brown pants on fag pants night, well what do you think would happen?

The people whining about gatekeeping are exactly the kind of people you don't want to let in because they probably want to change whatever it is that is the fundamental reason for the group existing and that typically leaves the group without a reason to exist.

Online forums it's rampant. But like, the whole point of any group is to be exclusionary. If you want to make a group for baseball it makes sense to exclude other sports, not because of malicious attitudes but simply because it would then turn into a generic sports group and whatever is the most popular sport would end up getting by far the most attention. Likewise you'd not want to include e-sports into a physical sports group for similar reasons.

Thing is the point of any group is to exclude everyone who isn't there for a particular purpose. And you need gatekeeping in order to do that. Gatekeeping can go bad and be too strict to the point that new members are scared off but that's a different issue entirely.

It's worse in nerd groups because the general dynamics around outcasts lead to loads of social drama and nonsense over petty non-important things. And the barriers to entry aren't so, physical so much as they are skill based in something like a sport. Even in competitive video games there's a skill level involved which is why you see the complaints about gatekeeping from the more pedestrian and lower skilled people.

You don't see as much complaints about gatekeeping from something like say, a mountaineering club because the gatekeeper is the mountain itself. Yeah we can tell you your equipment is shit and we aren't going to let you climb but the mountain doesn't care if you die on it. You can poo poo the suggestion not to attempt to walk up to 4,000 meters in the dead of winter by yourself with not crampons but the reality is the mountain will permanently gatekeep the fuck out of you just as Darwin intended.

Exactly, this is why I have to golf behind a boosted asshole in a pink tank top and a backwards bent bill hat who sticks his fatass hand in the hole ruining the edge, doesn't rake sand, and digs his crocs into the green all while blasting really shitty music louder than a fucking Slayer concert from his cart while he smashes whiteclaws and throws them on the ground 2 feet away from a trash can.

Diversity ruins things. Most, a large majority of people inherently roll with their own.

Sounds like Florida. Just tell em there's a winning Powerball ticket in the water trap. Let the gators do the rest.

Hahahaha. No Florida but I will be there twice this summer and surely will golf. I'll remember this.

Something I've always kind of wanted is a platform that combined social-media like functions with e-mail. So that it's less of a visual over-load, and keeps a lot of the communications as dms / e-mail. Or, maybe, and e-mail that allowed you to use it more like FB, only private. Just wondering.

[–]panel30 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I think friendica tried to include interoperability with email. I think some of the platforms/protocols out there support more private kinds of styles.

[–]tiny-brown-mug 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks. I might check them out. I guess what I'm looking for is something of a hybrid between e-mail and social, but that may not work very well, or maybe I should just stick with e-mail. Anyway, thanks, I'll look into them.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. I'd even say "computing was better before the Internet." It used to be something you did to escape other people. Now, they're right fucking there.

I began writing code in the early 80's on an Atari 800. Things were simple back then. I wrote basic programs and then I learned assembler and in '91 I learned C language.

.. somewhere along the road, the freaks and pedos learned to use the network to communicate and it all went to hell and that is how we came to have the modern internet.
