It's some time since I first saw saidit, a year maybe? It was eerily similar to reddit which I wanted to replace for some time (because of usual problems like powermods, admins suppressing more and more, politics in every non-tiny sub). The pyramid idea was intriguing, but I was a bit afraid if it's not too limiting. After all I was searching for a free speech platform and this looked like more moderation and oriented on discussions (looking at content now, I think I was wrong about saidit being only for discussions). In the end I was lured by ruqqus - its cute mascot, quite polished and modern UI, a promise of a free speech platform and admins saying they want to do as less as possible in terms of moderation, algorithms, ToS, ... and let the community to police themselves in their guilds (subs) as they see fit. Since you are reading this, you know how that ended, or at least how I view it (I plan on check on them from time to time, but they did and keep doing a lot of massive missteps, so I am not optimistic). It's funny/sad that most coins (paid currency) I got was from a post announcing I will no longer be active on ruqqus... I saw few people who got banned or left to mention saidit, so here I am. (I am also pretty sure I saw magnora on ruqqus or maybe their discord discussing theory behind reddit-like "social" networks, and s/he seemed intelligent and calm.)
I think I should write a bit about me. I have to preemptively apologize for my English, it's not my native language (feel free to keep correcting me, otherwise I won't improve). I am from Europe, work in IT. I like to toy with 3d modelling in Blender. I am an occasional gamer (pc - linux). I think I could say I am a fan of free open-source software (but not "religious", I do have installed few pieces of non-free software). Politically I am a centrist and only started to care about politics, I think a year or two, before Trump got elected and games/series/movies began to be affected (or maybe I just started to notice). I try to limit consumption of political content to a reasonable level.
I have some experience with front-ends (that's the thing that shows and runs in your browser), so I have to mention it. Please don't take it as an attack, but the looks of this site could use some improvement (low res icons and images, inconsistent layout and colors). I think I saw some activity on github, so I guess development is ongoing. I am curious, are some visual improvements planned? Is there a roadmap?
I am unsure if I stay (at a first glance there doesn't seem to be much nonpolitical content), but I do like the PoD and upvotes-only. Maaaybe in the future I might lend a hand (if getting a local instance running is not too complex).
I saw only logos, is there any saidit mascot? Or is mascot the pyramid? :D
Any subs (subsaidits?) you can recommend?
PS: That captcha is brutal, 14ish letters and sometimes they fully blend with background making it impossible to tell which letter it was supposed to be. I have failed like 3 times. 🤖
