Welcome! You don't seem to be the usual "got banned from Reddit for saying gas the jews" type, and with how in-depth your post is: I might quite like having you around. You seem like the kind of guy who actually contributes, instead of posting Chinese vacuum pump ads (true story). Your English is actually pretty good, so don't worry about that.

Magnora told me he began working on Saidit after leaving Reddit and Ruqqus Voat, so I'm sure he knows how you feel. He said he wanted a site that wasn't left-biased like Reddit, or right-biased like Ruqqus Voat, so it's kind of centrist (although most the users seem to be alt-right, though not all far-right, there's a difference).

I'm a Centrist as well, and even mod s/centrism, which I literally made the other day because I realized it didn't exist. I'm a Radical Centrist, and more specifically: a Syncretist. Not a "true" Centrist, because I have center-right social views, and center-left economic views, but a Centrist nevertheless. I'm a big fan of the Reform Party (USA), and even voted for Rocky back in November.

There are a lot of problems with the site's interface, like how Mexican Spanish has words in {curly brackets} all over the place (I've been using it for a few days to help get familiar with some of the words). A few things here and there also mention Reddit, since Saidit is based on the old source code. I ain't noticed the graphics, since they're small on my screen, but somebody (u/JasonCarswell ?) should make them into SVGs, so they can work at any size.

The mascot is u/AmericanMuskrat 's cat. That's just a joke... we ain't got one. We could use some sort of Pyramid, maybe with a mouth on it for the pun? IDK, that might stir up the conspiracy theorists and make them think the NWO took over.

My major problem with the site is that there's no non-political content. There are non-political subs, but they're mostly dead. If you want to revive them: make sure to post there. People mostly come here because they're banned from somewhere else, and want to talk politics, which really drowns out everything else.

I ain't seen a captcha in months. I'm sure it'll go away after a while. Also, make sure not to post too fast, or you'll get IP-blocked (usually error 1020). I remember seeing a few people post about that. If you are blocked: you could probably use TOR to ask for help.

Make sure to read the wiki and report any spam you see. Usually it's the CCP bot Musky talked about, links to websites in Arabic, or ads. Porn is also not allowed, since it's hard to moderate.

Have a good time!

Yeah, I haven't been banned from Reddit nor Ruqqus. I just didn't like admins' actions and the direction of those platforms, I felt like I should try something else. I sometimes enjoy reading conspiracy stuff or dark/edgy memes, but I guess it isn't in my nature to troll or post too offensive stuff.

You seem like the kind of guy who actually contributes

I don't usually write/post that much. I was a little bit more active on Ruqqus, creating some fanart 1 2 and was developing a userscript (something like browser extension) named RuqES similar to Reddit's RES (a bit simpler). It started with me missing an expando button and infinite scroll, but since than I added a lot of features, I didn't even use all of them :D.

posting Chinese vacuum pump ads (true story)

Your English is actually pretty good, so don't worry about that.

I am glad it's understandable. I wasn't sure if it isn't a bit long, but it looks like at least few people read it, so I call it a success. :D

Didn't know about the Magnora history. To the Ruqqus bias, it has become a bit complicated, because admins seem to push against more extreme right - e.g. they virtually quarantined many their subs with first version of categories, only after public backlash admins were forced to modify categories, undo hiding of those guilds (subs). You simply can't do such things when the slogan of your platform is "without censorship".

I ain't noticed the graphics, since they're small on my screen

Yep, it depends on scaling from OS and zoom in browser. It's too small for me on 100% (browser) zoom, so I am usually using 133%.

but somebody (u/JasonCarswell ?) should make them into SVGs, so they can work at any size.

If nobody else is interested, I could try to vectorize it. I have some limited experience with Inkscape (not a pro, but I did few simpler logos). I wanted to learn grease pencil (2D drawing tool) in Blender, but I think currently svg export is broken, so I am using Inkscape for vector graphics now.

like how Mexican Spanish has words in {curly brackets} all over the place

Maybe missing translation files, or in incorrect version, or new strings were added but not translated to all languages? I think internationalization (translations) are done on the backend (the server part), I am more of a front end guy and also don't like python that much, probably won't be able to help with this.

I was asking about the mascot because I really enjoyed making those ruqqies (the ruqqus mascot). Working on something I can share later (even if it isn't very good) gives me motivation to learn/practice in Blender (it's just a hobby).

My major problem with the site is that there's no political content. There are non-political subs, but they're mostly dead. If you want to revive them: make sure to post there. Yeah, that's a common theme on platforms like saidit. On Ruqqus I really missed multireddits, I like when I can categorize subs as I want, e.g. hobbies and politics apart. It seems multireddits on saidit are implemented, will have to try them later :). I am planning on posting at least videos I find interesting (mostly gaming, tech, sometimes programming and math).

Have a good time!

Thanks, so far I like it here :).

I just didn't like admins' actions and the direction of those platforms

Oh, yeah. Magnora and d3rr are a lot better with Saidit than the admins are on other platforms.

they virtually quarantined many their subs with first version of categories, only after public backlash admins were forced to modify categories

It would be hard to trust them after that.

don't like python that much

I personally prefer Python; it's usually my go-to. I don't do website stuff with it, though, just little command line scripts here and there.

I was asking about the mascot because I really enjoyed making those ruqqies

Oh, cool, maybe you could make one for Saidit :P

It seems multireddits on saidit are implemented, will have to try them later

Oh, yeah, I forgot that was a thing. I was gon'o try it, but forgot.

Thanks, so far I like it here :).

Great!

Yeah, it's pretty much just maintenance. Every so often: someone will get banned for advocating violence, but nine times out of ten: it's someone trying to sell fake Indian diplomas or so'm (another true story).

I don't really expect that, ever. I'll be thrilled if I'm wrong. The mascot idea is far from new. Perhaps it will change when I start the online store.

I've saved your comment, should I ever get around to updating the SaidIt article on Infogalactic. I used to care about documenting the history and such. I'm moving on to greater projects (I hope).

                [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (8 children)

Here's one I just took. I can do a photo dump on Imgur of Gizmo if y'all want to use him. It probably makes more sense to do a stylized tuxedo cat rendition of Gizzie just so I don't own the living mascot, although now that I said it, that sounds kinda cool.

                [–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (7 children)

Cute cat, sweet face. Is there more to the pattern? Any chance you can get a few angles?

The pattern is peculiar. I'm trying to think of ways to address it aesthetically.

First thing that pops to mind is the Canadians on South Park with their detached heads.

A tuxedo is a great idea! However, I have 2 issues with that. A tux is fancy, usually implying wealth, etc. All neck ties are symbols of status quo leashes. A remedy for both is to lose the tie with an open collar to convey that SaidIt is both classy and casual.

Another issue for both your cat and tuxedos is the boring lack of colour. It doesn't make for a dynamic character. However, aside from CSS changes, SaidIt is pretty bland too, all in greys, aka black & white. On the plus side, it makes for simpler printing when the day returns where we print things in black & white. (Also, I aim to start a web store in 2021, including SaidIt merch.)

                [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

Any chance you can get a few angles?

Here's some more. Need a specific angle?

                [–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

I don't need angles so much as the fur pattern. It looks like it's the lower lip, neck and chest. Further? The feet? I guess it all depends how accurate we want it, if that's even an issue.

More importantly, would SaidIt even care or utilize a mascot?

                What's the name?

                [–]JasonCarswell 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

I've offered many times to improve SaidIt's graphics, and just did again to d3rr. I tried to inspire a campaign for a mascot to no avail.

" There are non-political subs, but they're mostly dead. "

That's not for lack of trying. I can post all day in them and few notice. It might be discouraging except that it builds it up for a potential future.

I believe they fixed the IP blocking.

I'm probably partly to blame, as 'all' on any site is my default. I know I probably miss a lot of content that doesn't get traction, but it's also not like the front pages are empty.

                [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

That's not for lack of trying. I can post all day in them and few notice

That's why I started viewing the site by All as default. There's too many subs for how many users there are, stuff gets missed. In the beginning of reddit they had just one sub. I think we should do that here, with people able to opt out of things that do not interest them, broad hash-tag-like filters.

                [–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

I WISH we had hash/metatags. I also wished we had democratically organized and created the subs collectively.

Magnora told me he began working on Saidit after leaving Reddit and Ruqqus

I thought that he began working on SaidIt way before Ruqqus was a thing though. Wasn't SaidIt started in 2017 while Ruqqus was started much later (not sure when, but the first post was made in 2019)?

He said he wanted a site that wasn't left-biased like Reddit, or right-biased like Ruqqus

I think that the right-biased site you're thinking about is Voat (RIP).

                https://old.reddit.com/r/C_S_T/comments/7nl32v/the_importance_of_decentralizing_our_community/ds3quht/

Hi, the name came from the fact of avoiding the two extremes of reddit and voat

                - magnora7, on "antiextremes"

My major problem with the site is that there's no political content

                I think you meant "non-political".

By the way, when did you become an admin?

                [–][deleted] 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun -  (6 children)

Yeah, it was Voat. I can never tell the difference.

A few months back, Magnora asked me to help him remove spam (like the aforementioned Chinese vacuum pump ad). I don't deal with anything else. I'm less of an actual admin, and more of a janitor, really.

I need to clean it up, finish it, shorten some things, and get rid of the graphs. And maybe update a few things. Not much changes much anymore (that I'm aware of) except the flavours of drama once in a while, most of which is not interesting history worth noting.

Instead of working on that, I'm going to do some other things and eventually migrate/mirror over to WikiSpooks.

That captcha is brutal, 14ish letters and sometimes they fully blend with background making it impossible to tell which letter it was supposed to be. I have failed like 3 times. 🤖

Works in IT, fails captcha. Might need a Turing test for this one. :)

LOL Saved! THAT is what I need to hear every day!

Once I get the story done and shared, I know I'll get feedback, good, bad, or ugly. I can work with/from that!!! There will always be room to improve. I can expect there will be at the very least a trickle of support from our community. At best I'll have strong demand for more.

I also have a Trillion Dollar Idea™ (in parts) that I need to share - and it applies to SaidIt, PeerTube, etc. The problem with this is it's not simple and critically it needs to be a well drafted manifesto that compels people to share it far and wide. Maybe I/we can draft it in a wiki.

I've also been struck with some crazy ass inspiration lately. Ironically, I also feel a sense of mental constipation in that I don't know how exactly all the pieces fit together so that I can push it out. I've been disappointed with myself and lack of focus/productivity for a few months, but there was something bubbling. I was hoping to start New Years to do that, but I actually don't mind right now because it's all taking shape in my head.

Further, because so much was coming down to me from God /s I wasn't quite sure which direction I should pursue. I was considering presenting it to SaidIt to ask for their view (mine might be biased). Then it occurred to me that I should figure out a way to just duet, but all of them, simultaneously. A trick indeed. But the important trick is to do it WHILE sharing all of it - thus raising funds for PeerTube Empire™, tools, my gardens, animators, etc. There are some surprises - not just for you, but some for me too. I wasn't expecting to go to some of these places - yet, if not me, then who? Mysterious I know, but it will all come out soon enough. February I can buy a domain (or few) so I can share the name(s). I don't like squatting on 3+ domains, so maybe soon I'll start basic sites for them. I need a new much cheaper registrar. Last year I think I got scammed. $60 to squat on 3 domains for a year - WTF?!?!?

Tonight I'm tearing apart some soggy snowy furniture. And a bit rusty in places. I waited too long. Someone else's junk is material I can build with. I'm so poor that I am recycling shit for the wood to make shelves and stuff from. I'm so dirt poor I can't even buy dirt for my garden. I'm so poor... actually, it's not really very funny.

While I think PeerTube is great, IMO it's not as important as the decentralized archiving and even more importantly spreading the idea that everyone must invest in and have their own home servers. More on that later. What's funny about you calling it a PeerTube Empire, is that a couple days ago I realized I've been conceptualizing my own little media empire to be organized on SaidIt. And by "mine" I mean that it's my seed idea that ideally will attract like minds (online and locally) to collaborate it into existence, including many more of my sub-idea projects I haven't share yet (much lower priorities).

As for the other things you sent me. They broke my mind. It's been 7 years since I used FreeNAS and they've basically solved most of those limits. I started a review for you, but my research of comparing and questions spiraled out of control and I had to step back. And I need to be sober. Alt-Censored seems to be the thing I'd been hoping for. They are experts and dedicated so I'm guessing they've got most of it all figured out compared to my half-assed hoarding. I have yet to delve deeper there.

So while I hate the cult of personality thing, I realize I will need to do it to a point. For example, people understand that Reddit has been corrupted from Aaron Schwartz's vision. Regardless if he was a people person or not - we know there was a vision. I've avoided making a sub about me, and am now trying to figure out how to make an engaging progress blog (and more!) about greater ideas within a vision. It's simple but it's complicated and most parts of it have many stages and levels of completion.

I know this doesn't make much sense right now for you. The ultimate 2 points are: 1) I'm trying to figure out how to share while I work. Importantly, it will be more compelling with illustrations. 2) I had some plans but in figuring out #1 I recently thought of a whole bunch more stuff to be integrated into my grand scheme. It may soon be time to make my own wiki to dump all my projects. Maybe on a dedicated Raspberry Pi or something?

Reddit has been corrupted from Aaron Schwartz's vision.

Whatever you think of the original reddit founders now, Schwartz was the failed site owner who scammed his way into reddit founder status. I was there on reddit when Schwartz, having gained founder status, told everyone to fuck off and flew to Thailand to take drugs and do whatever else. It was a massive topic.

That movie they made about him is an excellent example of propaganda being out of control.

It's just unfortunate that he was also able to skip out on his debt to society.

                            [–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

                            Interesting.

I like drugs and vacations so I don't begrudge him that.

I'm curious to know about how he "scammed his way into reddit founder status", why he "told everyone to fuck off", and "his debt to society".

It's a compelling documentary, regardless of its reality. I know I'd hate it if someone made one on me. Especially in a day and age where saying "fuck" or "scamdemic" is more offensive than perpetual wars. So far I've killed zero people, so I'm not that bad despite my endless flaws and mistakes.

                            [–]Node 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

how he "scammed his way into reddit founder status"

As I recall, Schwartz and the reddit founders were financed by the same guy, or group. When the social networking site Schwartz founded failed, either he or the finance people convinced the reddit founders to accept him for his programming skills. "We can save our investment!" or "You can save your investment!" Regardless, the reddit kids were essentially scammed into giving founder status to a scumbag who had failed in his own endeavor, and who then bailed on his obligation after gaining founder status at reddit.

"Fuck you, I'm never coming back"

People running reddit in that first year or so were not shy about discussing office political issues on reddit. After he quit working on programming for the site and fled to Thailand, that is the message they said he sent back.

So the irony of calling him a "reddit founder" is particularly ironic.

                            "his debt to society"

Meh, I suppose that's another debt he skipped out on as he left town. At least we're shut of him now.

                            TIL. Thanks.

Were you the one making cutting boards?

                            [–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

                            No. That sounds familiar though.

Also, I recently saw a nifty DIY video with some he made for folks at Xmas. Typically I wouldn't give a shit but man those were brilliant. A shame to cut on them.

                            [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Yeah someone was selling cutting boards. I don't remember who though. I wanted one. I still want one.

                            [–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I looked at hundreds of thumbnails of the endless YouTube videos. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=cutting+board I scoured my screenshots and to my surprise didn't find it. The one I'm looking for may not tickle everyone's fancy but I just love the design of it. I'm sure I'll see that guy's work again and when I do I can find it. I follow many DIY channels.

In my dreams I'd get a Farmbot, a 3D printer, and a CNC and make lots of neat shit. And maybe even document it for YouTube.

                            just duet

                            yesss

I'm so dirt poor I can't even buy dirt for my garden.

Hhahaa amen, that bagged dirt adds up quick.

While I think PeerTube is great, IMO it's not as important as the decentralized archiving and even more importantly spreading the idea that everyone must invest in and have their own home servers.

Fully agreed. I would substitute home server for any server though, to be pedantic, as long as you own and control it it's just as good as home serving.

I know this doesn't make much sense right now for you.

                            Good :)

                            1) I'm trying to figure out how to share while I work. Importantly, it will be more compelling with illustrations.

Twitch where you can get donations live? I like it.

Maybe on a dedicated Raspberry Pi or something?

                            The pi can fly!

/u/Snow was an over-dramatic and problematic person who claimed English was also not their first language. Some claim /u/Chipit is Snow, though I don't buy that. If you are Snow reincarnated I hope you'll behave. If you aren't then welcome regardless.

why do we need a mascot? answer: we don't. we aren't 5.

That's not how marketing works. You'd be surprised how effective some basic shit is.

Welcome Enefi! A number of us here are centrists, although there's all sorts.

I had suggested a mascot not too long ago. I think it'd be great to have one. The Saidit code is at https://github.com/libertysoft3/saidit if you want to take a look.

I don't think I ever had to do that long of a captcha, might have something to do with the persistent CCP bot. We could make that a mascot lol.

I ended up going into preferences and there's an option here to see All as default so I don't miss anything.

I'm a 3D animator preparing some projects. Perhaps down the road you might be interested in participating in some of these.

You're not the first to complain about SaidIt's CSS. I've even made a few of my own to counter the issues. I even designed the SaidIt logo. Wanted to do a mascot. But I've pretty much given up on trying to help improve SaidIt in that realm. Sadly there is no roadmap that they share.

You'll have to be more specific about what subs you're interested in, and in what way. There are many topical or "community" subs where people post their interests but few interact or notice them. That doesn't mean they won't be valued eventually. Feel free to check out my subs /u/JasonCarswell and if any are of interest there may be others related I can recommend too.

I am just a hobbyist learning Blender. I have done only some very basic animations, pretty sure I should continue learning modelling :D. I should probably focus on the classic way of modelling, but about a month ago I started experimenting with Sverchok (Blender addon) and while probably not very practical, I quite enjoy working in it (wrote a bit about it on ruqqus).

Wanted to do a mascot. But I've pretty much given up on trying to help improve SaidIt in that realm.

Oh, may I ask for the reason you have given up?

Checked your subs and subscribed to a few. Yeah, I know the feeling, I tried growing a few hobby/niche guilds (subs) on ruqqus and very rarely saw interaction from others. I know I personally should comment more, but since I am not a native speaker, it takes me a lot of time to put together even shorter pieces of text. Maybe I am just terrible in written word in general. :D
