Welcome to Saidit. There are no downvotes here. Downvotes are the nail in the coffin of free speech.

Happy to be here. This does look like a far freer place of expression than reddit. Would like to be part of making this a more active community for others who are also frustrated.

+3

Downvotes are the nail in the coffin of free speech.

Honest downvotes would be reasonable.

The Internet "honor system" fails when contaminated by money, and ideology.

Either way, IMO, the real problem is when the ratio is obscured.

  • Reddit subtracts the down from the up = misleading values.
  • Facebook doesn't show downvotes, only total reactions.
  • YouTube no longer displays downvotes, formerly a good gauge.

Better to have the honest transparent numbers in the open, showing the good, bad, and fun(ny).

I can see some potential problems associated with not displaying downvotes, on YouTube this has clearly been problematic.

Gotta agree Reddits subtraction is also non-sensical, lots of upvotes and downvotes just show something is controversial and widely viewed, not that it's unimportant.

Agreed.

We were already chatting, but welcome. I highly recommend browsing by s/all or changing preferences->content options->home page to All.

First thing I used to do with a new Reddit account was farm a little bit of karma. r/AskReddit is usually good for a couple thousand without much effort. Just need to pick the right spots, visible places on the comment trees, in active threads, to insert stupid one-liner jokers or whatever kind of crap you see being upvoted.

Once you have a nice pile of karma you can say whatever the fuck you want without worrying about downvotes. However, this alarms the redditors. They do not understand why you are not terrified of downvotes. Unfortunately this usually results in bans, even without any rule breaking.

Not that I recommend using Reddit, but if that is your preference, don't let karma stop ya.

Hello again Muskrat, thanks for the tip, I think I kind of like how this might keep the subs less quarantined. The reddit stuff you mention really is also part of what turned me off to the community, it makes the interactions feel 'gamified' and less than satisfying. Been enjoying the discussions here on Saidit so far

Please make that intro a public service announcement. Maybe link to some other PSAs too.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (5 children)

I know what you're thinking. Something like:

PSA: How to keep yo ass back on Reddit, and not be bothering any of the fine folk on Saidit cause you ain't know to dodge a ban or farm karma.

This OP seems decent tho.

I know what you're thinking.

Clearly not. My fault for 1) being lazy, 2) not being clear enough, 3) referring to your "intro" paragraph in your comment within /s/Introductions might be easily confused to the feeble-minded and hurried-readers alike (I know you're not the former).

Is very similar to this:

I paraphrased the most pertinent information for a new user here, how to more effectively navigate the site than a more reddit-centric approach.

We could have automod give posters a comment with relevant info. Not a bad idea, but if it's too long people are just going to skip it. And it's not just that alone, new people should be reading the site rules and PoD as well.

Great idea.

Agreed.

new people should be reading the site rules and PoD as well.

Completely unnecessary. Both and more are all in the FAQ. Centralized, simple, and clear.

I've been meaning to draft a "SaidIt Newbie Tips", "SaidIt Pro Tips", and others, to include in the FAQ to be improved over time, and to copypasta post on occasion. A bot could rotate through them and repost one every 10 days or something, and/or, do that automod thing. Perhaps you'd be interested in drafting up some wiki info like that? (I'm swamped working on /s/Projex and some rally stuff.)

/u/d3rr, thoughts?

JC and /u/AmericanMuskrat every new user gets messaged this, feel free to suggest improvements or make them (without being a verbose motherfucker) https://saidit.net/wiki/templates/welcome_message

I feel this welcome message is really the one chance to communicate how we deepthroat the whole pyramid

For something so auspicious there should be welcoming tits.

It's been that way for some time, I for example have over 20 accounts so when one gets banned (disagreeing of saying something offensive) I have another one old enough to post comments and I post little happy comments on newer accounts because that's what reddit likes. I actualy got banned for saying i'm curious, do you give dad a daily reminder how he forgot to wear a condom to a snowflake.

[–]Antarchomachus[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yep I agree it's ridiculous, one of the main things that drove me away from reddit.

[–]binaryblob 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Do you run separate browsers and VPNs for all of those accounts? It's incredibly easy to be detected otherwise.

[–]Brewdabier 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

It's 20 account's on standby, one get's banned I create more. When creating a new account I never do the email thing, just username and the same exact password for all. Reddit as yet does not block IP address when creating a new account and from my experience when starting a new account behind a vpn it never works. There's much more involved in reddit ban policy plus you go through lots of BS post and I'm getting board sitting for half hour skimming past the childish crap looking for something good to read.

[–]binaryblob 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Perhaps you need to piss them off more. They can harass you a lot more.

[–]Brewdabier 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

They can harass you a lot more.

Wrong, I rather enjoy hurting there feelings.

Reddit used to be cool once upon a time. Now it feels like a euphoric circle jerk. Reddit did file to go public...
