TRAs have taken over the gay rights movement. But it’s not just TRAs, but Marxists and neoliberals as well. All of this woke crap has been sleeping into everything. And it seems like people are accepting it hook line and sinker. Especially in English speaking countries. I’m thinking of learning a new language now.

Yup, they've fully infected any non-rightwing discourse. As I put it in a previous thread:

Donald Trump really was the worst thing to happen to progressivism. Sure, this shit was being pushed before him, but 2016 really ramped up the "drink any cool-aid that calls itself progressive because if not you're WITH TRUMP!" Thus every "progressive" in the Anglosphere was suddenly completely onboard with every drop of TRA rhetoric because it's "progressive" and "fighting Trumpism".

US politics was already fucked beyond repair, but the Trump derangement syndrome causing the radicalization of run-of-the-mill progressives to "leftist" radlibs was really the nail in the coffin.

It's everywhere. I can barely watch most media because they always find some way to bring "twans" into it. Always. To be "a progressive" in 2021 it seems requires constantly repeating TWAW and "I hate t3rfs" every 5 minutes or you'll be cancelled, and I've always been a and identified with progressives. This shit is indeed cancerous.

I was a progressive until 2016. Not anymore. The events in 2020 and 2021 have ensured that I will never be a progressive again.

That alone is the case for Trump.

I mean, no, not really. He's a very broken clock who happens to be right about this one thing. Supporting Trump for his T stance in comparison to, just for one example, his LGB stance, is not just throwing out the baby with the bathwater, it's throwing out the entire neighbourhood with the bathwater.

[–]eliminate_osa_disord 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No, it isn't, and why should the people who sold us out to the T get anything?

Yeah, I had to unfollow a really interesting animal behaviorist because they decided it's wrong to refer to animals by male or female because we don't know if dogs and goldfish and shit have a concept of gender. Literally when most of their blog was about how bad it is to anthropomorphize animals. How the fuck can you go through college to become a biologist and decide that male and female are not words that refer to gamete production? Shit's insane.

Possibly don’t even have any friends at all anymore, because they might abhor me if they knew I agree with pretty much everything Rowling said. Have to be careful to remain extremely impersonal at work.

I completely relate to this, and know several other women in the exact same boat as you. It is definitely jarring and unsettling to see longtime friends who you have a deep bond with going off the rails in support of this TRA shit, especially the ones cursing Rowling. It makes one realize how many people are 1) extremely susceptible to propaganda, 2) don't give a shit about women's rights and safety, and/or 3) cowards.

I wish I could tell you with 100% certainty that this will all blow over, and give a timeframe, but I can't. In the meantime, try and stay friends with the ones you really care about, and try and just avoid TRA topics with them. If they try and bring them up, you can make an excuse or change the subject. If you trust them, you can say what you really feel, and show them the essay she's written, point out the things you agree with, and try and stay logical about it. I've noticed TRA arguments are either vague platitudes, slogans, or short. Explaining yourself logically and clearly, without using the phrases "terf" or "radical feminist" or "drop the t", tends to reach people better. Sometimes I think about the quote "you can fool some people sometimes, but you can't fool all the people all the time", and it reminds me that this malafide trend will end eventually.

If you need a place to vent, we're all here and we agree with you.

I lost a very close friend of 15 years a few months ago due to differences of opinion on both trans issues and the current political climate. I mean, we went through some shit together and we weren't just friends, we were close. She decided she could no longer be my friend and "she didn't know how to talk to me anymore". I suppose in the end it's for the best, but I cried for three days.

[–]bopomofodojo 25 insightful - 1 fun25 insightful - 0 fun26 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

These people really are cultists. I hate to do a "both sides" (as a committed Marxist and Materialist, I'm not a centrist lol), but fucking hell the hard-right is a cult, and the woke "left' is a cult.

She decided she could no longer be my friend and "she didn't know how to talk to me anymore".

Straight out of cult doctrine.

I can only hope the tide starts to sway, but given how batshit insane everyone on "both sides" seems to be, I'm quickly losing any hope.

I wish you all the best though, may you find better friends.

[–]marmorsymphata 23 insightful - 1 fun23 insightful - 0 fun24 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I've spent the past 4 years watching my father shed all his principals and turn into a selectively brainless Trump psychophant and it's been so creepy to watch. I'm only just realizing that the left is doing the exact same thing, just with the trans cult. I can't figure out where it comes from. How and why did everyone collectively lose their minds and cluster up the moment Obama's term ended?

[–]bopomofodojo 36 insightful - 1 fun36 insightful - 0 fun37 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It's a hot take, but: Social Media.

The algorithms are beyond destructive, they're actively malicious. You are fed a constant diet of affirming (in a general, not TRA, sense) content, things that agree with your worldview, posts, and are tailored to your very specific (and even personal) demographic. Slowly, fringe views no longer seem fringe because you see them all the time, and newer and newer fringe views seep in, and the cycle repeats.

I've seen numerous people on both left and right succumb to this and this is the unifying thing. They are terminally online, they get all their information from Twitter/Facebook/Instagram/YouTube, they're always sharing memes (feeding the algorithm), and once it's taken hold it just builds on itself. It doesn't matter what the content is: Qanon MAGA shit, trans shit, or hell even gardening shit. It happens the same way regardless.

Couple this with the fact that huge swaths of my (millenial) and younger generations have built basically their entire social lives online. For the zoomers, in a lot of cases it literally is their only social live, even among their IRL peers. This is also why cancel culture is so effective; the idea of having your whole social life destroyed for making one false move makes everyone anxious and hyper-reflexive in their affirmations of loyalty to the cult ("TWAW", "the election was rigged", etc.).

I don't know if there's even a way to fix this, short of massive deprogramming on a societal level. But since this serves the ruling class, and the majority have seemingly succumb to it, I don't know how to even begin fighting back, at least not in their realm. Only IRL can help.

Finally I think the timing with the end of the (second) Obama term was mostly coincidental. This really started very early in the 2010's with the rise of the algorithms on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, which was then adopted by other social media sites/apps. It really started to show itself in 2016 after a gradual initial climb, and has now become almost all-encompassing.

Balkanization. This is what happens when you have too much diversity in a country and not enough in common to hold it all together. Tribalism takes over and people begin to separate like oil and water.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm kind of a social weirdo anyway and she was one of my two closest friends, the sting was deep. I'm not even sure how to make friends anymore. My interests are fairly esoteric and it seems like if people aren't woke nut jobs they're literally Nazis (and how I've come to hate how people throw that word these days so when I say literally I mean literally). I'm in existential despair where humanity goes from here.

[–]bopomofodojo 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I feel you there, the polarization is becoming increasingly dangerous. Not because ideologies clash; that's always been the case. But because of the sheer resistance to anyone actually questioning what they believe. Your friend's response is a classic example of that - rather than deal with what you're saying in a reasoned way, they completely shut down with the "I don't know how to talk to you (anymore)" bit, which is really just an excuse to end all interaction lest you inadvertently cause her any cognitive dissonance by questioning her views. It's a sad state of affairs when friends are torn apart, not even because of some deep-seated ideological difference, but because of questions about some pretty absurd aspects of a particular shared ideology. Then again, as a leftist, I know the depths of leftist infighting over trivial shit, so, I guess it's hard to be surprised, but still that shouldn't be ending close friendships.

Unfortunately, it seems that social weirdos have problem finding non-woque social weirdos to hang out with. I don't know what it is about the community, maybe unchecked mental illness, but all of my "weirdo" associates have decided they are trans or are extreme-left TRAs years after I stopped speaking to them for other incompatibility reasons.

I was on the Internet for a while today, the first time since I really delved into all of this gender stuff two weeks ago. I’ve been on the brink for a while but have been consuming gender critical media during all my online time since.

I never noticed how HATED JK Rowling is. Like, I knew people disliked her... I guess I never noticed how bad it was when I didn’t care as much.

Every time I saw her mentioned in a comment or meme I got a stomach ache.

How could they treat someone like that? For expressing concern... like, she cares. About people. Even if she was wrong or misguided, they’re literally shitting on her for showing concern for children and women. it is really disgusting.

What caused you to do that?

[–]Ferngully 14 insightful - 1 fun14 insightful - 0 fun15 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It started when I read JK Rowling’s essay. I wasn’t super invested, but the reaction around me didn’t sit right with me. I spoke to my very intelligent and woke sister about it and she assured me it was filled with false transphobic rhetoric. I began lurking on r/lgbdropthet. Was to scared to subscribe, and never made my way over to r/gendercritical before they all disappeared.

I remembered seeing this site in a post, so I made an account and slowly started using it.

I was making a comment on a question that was something like “Why should/shouldn’t trans girls be included in the Girl Scouts?”

And as I commented, I wanted to reference my experience with trans women in adult therapy spaces, which weren’t positive. Before I knew it, I had written a whole off-topic essay that I didn’t even end up posting.

The realization that nobody ever asked what it was like kind of shook me. The experiences were not positive, but I had always just passively dismissed them.... I started feeling kind of angry. Like why?

So I started actively seeking out content creators. I listened to Gender: A wider lense. I found Arty Morty, You’re Kiddin’ right?, and Posie Parker. I read blogs and articles I found through research.

I can’t believe I didn’t find all this stuff sooner. I’ve been dancing around it for so long. You really have to seek that kind of content out, apparently.

False consciousness. Everyone goes along with it believing that everyone else is a true believer. Eventually it will reach a critical mass where enough people realize that everyone else is faking it, too, and the collective delusion falls away.

I just got an e-mail this morning from LGB Alliance USA. The subject was "FACT SHEET ON SEX-BASED RIGHTS AND GENDER IDENTITY". I wanted to forward this to my son, but could not - "The response from the remote server was: 554 5.7.1 Spam detected by content scanner. Message rejected." I actually had to edit the subject line to successfully forward!

I have been a Feminist & Gay Rights activist since the 70s, my entire adult life. I did not fight to lose our Women-only spaces, our sports, our very legal recognition, to MEN who "feel" like women. Suddenly, I am faced with not being able to stand 100% with Amnesty International, the ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center & even the bloody MS foundation! I bought the 1st issue of Ms. & now its foundation is headed by a MAN!

I only recently became aware of the TRA. I became aware when i found myself horrified by the vitriol against Rowling - it PROVED to me these MtFs were MEN! I have become very saddened to be shut down, directly & indirectly for questioning the TRA in my circle. My best female friend shut down a conversation, for trying to talk about Abigail Shrier's book "Irreversible Damage" (I was depressed for days). I must now avoid this topic or lose my friend.

I feel quite isolated, so I'm grateful for this space.

What you said about being shut down resonated with me. One of my closest friends, whenever I bring up anything "verboten" or remotely critical of this gender special shit, literally shuts down and redirects the convo. She literally nods, stares out into space and then switches the topic. It's fucking harrowing. She's brainwashed. You can almost hear the alarms going off in her head. It's like something out of 1984 or maybe Westworld when the androids/robots/whatever their name is see a picture of the outside world and parrot mindlessly, "doesn't look like anything to me."

Women internalize misogyny to the point where they end up coerced into upholding the patriarchy, as tumblr-y as that sounds. Just look at who upholds and carries out a lot of misogynistic traditions in the world. In parts of Africa, it is the women who carry out FGM on little girls. In Islam, it is the mother and the female relatives who punish the daughter for not wearing her hijab or wearing it improperly, (nothing wrong with wearing a hijab--so long as it is a personal choice. If a woman wears it due to fearing retaliation from her community, it is no longer a fucking choice). In countless other cultures, the mother favors her sons over her own damn daughters as well as putting the needs of her husband first. And in the USA, it is the women ("handmaidens") who uphold the farce that TWAW.

No, I'm not a woman hater; in fact I am one myself. And of course men are complicit too, no doubt. But these are just some observations I've noted.

Unfortunately, it is being murdered yet again by groups of mysandrist women who destroy the credibility that real, equality seeking feminists worked so hard over generations to build.

Nowadays, when someone hears the word "feminist" they think of a screeching TRA with dyed hair who wants all men (the ones that identify as such, anyway) to die in a fire so women can inherit the world. It is a shame that this is what the public image of a movement that started to secure equal rights and opportunities has become

    [–]EmotionalProstitute 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I'm pretty sure the screeching harpy feminist stereotype goes alllllll the way back to the Reagan era. It all started as a mudslinging campaign, propaganda meant to damage the movement. And look at the damage it's done. It's 2021 and feminists are still viewed by the public as this caricature--only now with neon hair.

    [–]GoValidateYourselfuseful lesbian 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh the screeching harpy feminist stereotype goes all the way back to the suffragettes, seriously. They were really, really hated by so many people. Rowling's treatment by the press, and people framing feminists as "hysterical harpies" for worrying about women and children's rights and safety reminds me of the treatment of the suffragettes. The problem now is TRAs hijacked the feminist movement, are actually screeching harpies, and now are the face of the movement.

I'm curious to know what the comic was, but I too am increasingly excited about spaces that push back against wokeness, don't take up that torch, explicitly block it, etc.

I run an advice group, and I've created a preemptive rule to head off stuff like this.

I forget the exact words but it's something to the extent of this is about advice, if your response is not giving advice to the OP, it may be best to keep it to yourself.

The webcomic I was referring to is called Sister Claire. You may have heard of it, I think it used to be fairly well known back in the day. No idea what state the comic is in now though, it's been around 3 years since I stopped reading it, I think.

Anyway, the comic had a couple characters that were based on characters the artist was a fan of. One was Olga, who was based on Helga from Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Another was Oscar, who was based on a character of the same name from an anime called The Rose of Versailles. Oscar and Olga were pretty clearly originally just intended to be "jokey" side characters, but they both got upgraded to main characters later on. Oscar especially had a really small role in the story before the artist went back and started changing shit.

Oscar was the one who was later made MtF, and I'm pretty sure I know why. I've never watched The Rose of Versailles personally, but I do know a little bit about it. In the anime, Oscar was an actual woman who was raised as a boy by her father because he wanted a son so badly. I think the artist of Sister Claire just thought they were being sooooo clever, to have an MtF character be based on a female character who was raised as a boy. As if to say that Oscar in Sister Claire and MtFs in general are just like the Oscar from The Rose of Versailles: girls who were wrongfully raised as boys and "assigned male" by someone else.

Thanks for explaining! I don't know the comic, but I really appreciate explaining the context behind everything.

I find this so relatable. If you hang in fandom spaces I think this is even more prevalent. I really praise Twitter's feature of muting words/phrases so I could get rid of all these trendy trans Tweets regardless if they are just some reasonable ones as just not being rude to them or more insane ones such a saying vagina isn't an inherently female organ... before I used this... my timeline was full of this. Probably more of it than fandom stuff I was there for. But TRAs will say it's not a trend and no one recruits people to be trans. I mean you're rarely ever approached directly to join. Being exposed to this all the time and seeing how every second account you follow has they/she pronouns makes you definitely think of yourself in such a context...

On a note about LK, he has put disclaimers up on his older (actually funny) vids begging for forgiveness for his sins against the morality police. I used to feel bad for the dude and his never-ending mental health struggles, but this spineless obsequiousness is pathetic. It is hard to respect someone like him.

Really? That's interesting. Was it the episode with Princess Adina(sp?)? I remember he mocked her pretty hard for being an uncanny valley female version of a male character.

That's what I noticed about Reddit 5-6yrs back(before I quit for good)---EVERY subreddit I went to was littered by trans related topics which had NOTHING to do with said subreddit(ex. r/Curlyhair, and every female based subreddit)...Even when there was r/GenderCritical, r/TrueBisexuals, r/LGBDroptheT, it still felt like it wasn't enough when being surrounded by trans topics up in my face everywhere. Why can't I look at DnD related sub's without hearing about Trans? What does it have to do with anything? Or even curly hair? I don't care about your "trans journey", it's JUST hair man.

It's started to leak in videogames too. My psycho (former) pansexual coworker told me all excitedly how Apex Legends has " non-binary" characters and the like. Just...why?? Part of the reason I can't bring myself to play that game---my partner plays the game but has no idea about this gender identity crap. I also used to like Dragon Age Inquisition, but they have trans characters too...

Then a show I watched called "Casa de Papel" (I think in English they call it "Money Heist") in the latest season has a trans woman character(MtF) BUT the character is played by a biological woman which makes no sense. If they want to be so "inclusive" why don't they use an ACTUAL trans actor? Trans people, no matter how much surgery/hormones, would NEVER even look like a biological man/woman anyways...

I recently quit a TQ+ type job where all they talked about was extremely left-wing politics.

I am getting TIRED of seeing that stuff everywhere.

Right now, I see less of it and try to avoid it if I can. If I need some sanity, I come to this subsaidit or even ovarit but...I feel a bit out of place on ovarit, it's rather left-winged too and I'm a centrist...apart from following a specific ideology which I don't follow(ex. Radical feminism). Though, the cool thing is, Ovarit is a website made for biological women, away from TRA nonsense.

EDIT: I used to look at atheist YouTube channels until one tried to cancel another atheist YouTuber for being "transphobic". Then said " transphobic" YouTuber responded by talking about how he likes trans people and accepts them yada yada instead of being gender critical...

These supposed "skeptical" thinkers think that TRAs are "logical". It...doesn't make sense to me one bit.
