On behalf of all our mods, we missed you all too!

This is the official thread to discuss what went on, and what to do moving forward. I'm temporarily removing our "Why Do You Want To Drop The T?" post to make sure this gets the attention it needs.

This is the second time within a few weeks that SaidIt went down. All of us are concerned about the longevity of this site, and our forum.

Suggestions for what we do as a backup? This IS the backup we relied on, so we need some more thoughts and ideas.

Should we make a website for this forum? Considering that Saidit may go down again and we don't know if everytime it will go up again and if this becomes recurrent we might loose a lot of users that no longer are interested bc the site keeps crashing down :(

[–][deleted] 20 insightful - 1 fun20 insightful - 0 fun21 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I agree, I can only be here on the weekends due to life, but I really miss the sanity this little community brings.

[–][deleted] 15 insightful - 1 fun15 insightful - 0 fun16 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

You're not the first user to suggest that.

Is anyone here a back-end developer who knows the ins-and-outs of creating a website? How to create and run a server, monitor attacks, etc etc?

Is any user here willing to put their anonymity on the line, and pay to get a unique site going? Are you willing to get in the line of fire of big tech, and make sure we stay online no matter what? Is ANYONE able to step up and meet the demands?

I mean, us mods don't have the skill to create and run a website, we admit it. If we did, we would have done so long ago. We're willing and open to advice, but you don't get to have that kind of control until you meet our demands and prove yourself.

I wish I could but usually to pay for sites you gotta pay in dollar and I don't have enough money

I'm sorry if I offended you somehow... I just don't want to loose the small space of sanity I found here

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

You didn't offend me, and I'm sorry if it came off that way! We don't want to lose any of you either!

Those of us mods who are still here just don't have the ability to create and run a website of our own. None of us have the skills to do so. I'm the most tech-savvy of us, and I know enough to realize that I don't REALLY know anything, LOL

Privacy/anonymity, money, dev, and IT abilities are just some parts of it. There's also making sure we don't cross legal boundaries, someone has to understand and continually monitor that, and make sure we're in compliance locally and worldwide. Someone's gotta focus on marketing and PR, getting our name out there and keeping our message alive.

Each aspect of running a website has to be someone's responsibility, like a team leader/manager in the workplace. Each team leader has to also be dedicated to staying responsible and accountable, not only for their part, but to the greater LGBDropTheT mission. There's also gotta be a point person, like a CEO if you will, who's dedicated to keeping the mission on-track for the team, and answers to shareholders (users and donators).

Creating a site sounds simple on the outside, but it would be a VERY serious commitment, far greater than what even being a mod entails. Modding for LGBDropTheT would be the first step though.

[–]powpowpowpow 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Damn, it really sounds tough I had no idea :(

I hope we can somehow achieve a site either way or find a better platform in the meantime, would discord be a bad idea?

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

We've thought about Discord, and decided against it as it would be one more place we'd have to mod, and constantly. Modding live chat is a far different beast than modding a forum, and would require A LOT more engagement than we're able to be responsible for right now. Our mod availability has shrunk significantly, and we're just basically maintaining here on SaidIt, barely able to grow the other channels we once were eager and active in and committed to.

We're also concerned about user privacy. Most Discord users have one account, so all of us will know your main @handle as well as your server-specific @handle. Unless y'all prepared ahead of time thinking about that, and created alts just for us, that's kind of a pain for everyone.

We heard rumors in the past that Discord was adminning/banning servers they didn't like based on subject matter. Do you know if there's any truth to that, are they going all "hate speech and content policy" like Reddit, even on private servers?

We're currently thinking of ways to set up some sort of announcement board or site for you all. Nothing fancy, not a website we own or new forum or anything, but somewhere you can bookmark and check if this site goes down to make sure we know, and find out what our plans and next steps are rather than being redirected to Reddit and playing the waiting game.

Maybe we'll just need to finally set up a Twitter, or make a blog or something.

There's https://forums.slgbs.org/, which is part of the #SuperStraight/Sexualities movements. Not a lot of activity, but we can become active over there.

I thought about creating a backup for lgbdropthet but changed my mind. Currently working on other projects at the moment.

I only made this Saidit account honestly to check out DroptheT and GC sub(which I don't consider myself GC anymore since it's tied to a certain ideology).

But anyways, I think that slgbs forum may be one of the best alternatives we have for now.

I’m glad it’s back up. We need this place.

I was starting to think Saidit was gone for good this time. I think we might need to start seriously considering a new platform though. This site seems pretty unreliable.

[–]reluctant_commenter 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Agreed, and at the very least, some sort of solid backup.

[–]ThiccDropkickGay 18 insightful - 1 fun18 insightful - 0 fun19 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Do we have any info on what happened yet?

Long story short: We don’t know. This may become a regular thing, however.

This is not sustainable. Saidit needs to do something about it, but how can they if this small subsaidit is one of, if not the most active forum on this site.

[–]Criticallacitirc 15 insightful - 1 fun15 insightful - 0 fun16 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The instability of saidit worries me, I wish we had somewhere else to go.

I haven’t been on here as much as I used to so was confused when it would automatically redirect to Reddit. Glad to see this place back up.

"All of us are concerned about the longevity of this site, and our forum. Suggestions for what we do as a backup? This IS the backup we relied on, so we need some more thoughts and ideas."

Uh, in the past 30 years of my life I've never seen administrators say, "We're completely powerless and have no idea where the wind might blow tomorrow! We could just be blasted out of existence again, as you may have noticed twice in a month. Act of God or something! "

Thoughts and ideas? Try to stably exist like 2,900,000 websites do every day. To not have fellows and users shunted to Reddit again in a confused unexplained car-crash mess. My god, is this the AOL 90s Wild West internet again, amateur hour? Because it feels like it thanks for the nostalgia! Sorry if I'm bitchy, it's just so weird it happened AGAIN when it JUSt happened and we're all shunted to Reddit to read Bible verses. WTF?

The mods here are not administrators of this site. The actual Admin have not said anything.

We should think about setting up shop somewhere else, or at least getting a backup. The GC sub has Ovarit but I don't know of any other equivalents to this sub. Glad to be back though!

[–]BEB 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There's a Lesbian circle on Ovarit.com. I think it's exclusively for lesbians, but perhaps the lesbians here who are also on Ovarit can help Saidit posters find each other if s/LGBDroptheT goes down permanently? Just a thought...

There are bigger issues here than a bunch of regular people who have lives offline can rectify.

We need shelter on a website that can't be taken offline by its bank, server host, Cloudflare, professional trolls, lobbying groups, threats to the site owner or their family, politicians, etc.

The only people I can think who have that type of ironclad site hosting aren't anybody DroptheT wants to associate with, and we probably would be declined a sub on their platform regardless for political reasons. I'm talking about .win obviously.

Exactly.

Believe me, we've thought about it too ... the alternatives that exist would reflect negatively on us and our goals, if we were even allowed to be there at all. We're already called nazi sympathizers and puppets/socks of the alt-right. Do we really want to cement that opinion?

Also, sidenote about .win ... it's my understanding that we would still be required to host our own instance of a .win community. And then if the creator of https://communities.win were so inclined, we could be added to their sidebar roster, but no one has been added there for quite some time. I think IP2 or maybe KiA2 were the last ones added, and that was 10 months ago or so.

I'm not sure how it works. I know the mods created a Wall Street Bets clone when they were briefly banned from Reddit. That would have been March.

They don't have a FAQ section or a published guide of any kind, I skimmed their Meta sub briefly and it looks like the system you described is accurate. They complain about individual subs being down and also about individual sub owners. There seem to be a few toxic subs that cause trouble with each other and the rest of the site minds its own.

U/doggos is the main developer, iirc.

If anyone wants an Ovarit invite code, feel free to PM me.

It's worrying that Saidit keeps going down.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah even if these aren't necessarily attacks (last time it was a billing error apparently and it might've been the same thing this time) the unreliability is turning me off using this site. We may need to start a group on an existing site somewhere since it seems like most people here don't have the time/knowledge/resources to start a site from the ground up. Let alone maintain it.

[–]reluctant_commenter 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Maybe we could do a poll or something with some better-known options? E.g. Discord, Ruqqus? Just some sort of backup platform where people could re-convene in the event of another outage, that could be set up quickly. Doesn't have to be the ideal platform.

Long-term it'd be nice to have a website or something, but that takes a substantial investment of energy and time to set up.

Is Substack an option in any way...? I was half debating trying to look for people in Graham Linehan's comment sections while Saidit was down.

Also, I missed everyone else, too. I've gotten a lot busier lately (thanks, life) and but wanted to check in the other day, and got a nasty surprise when I kept being redirected to Reddit.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I think discord is a good place for a temporary backup and brainstorming solutions in case saidit goes under

[–]MarkJeffersonTight defenses and we draw the line 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yes, but only for temporary reprieves. They removed so many supersexual servers by now their censorship is only exceeded by Reddit. Never know when it might go too.

Also, I hope people here are aware there is a sub server; PM for invite.

[–]reluctant_commenter 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh really? I did not know Discord was so extreme on censorship as well, that's sad to hear.

[–]wafflegaffWoman. SuperBi. 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

As long as it's run by our mods and they have thoroughly checked to make sure they closed any security holes that would allow unauthorized people to control content, mess with users, etc.
