This is how I installed ffmpeg on Linux Mint 17. (I am sharing this for reference and help for downloading and installing on Linux.)

sudo apt install ca-certificates

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/trusty-media

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

    I appreciate your input, especially regarding the tip to upgrade, before update.

    Why do you need a ppa to install ffmpeg?

    ffmpeg was not available in my setup without specifying a different source. pacman is also not available on my setup.
