Reddit nukes the /r/redditAlternatives list right as the mass exodus starts, shadowbans all posts and comments that mention certain alternatives in the moment people are looking for alternatives

You literally cannot mention TheDonald.win without your post being completely shadowbanned, and this seems to apply for many other alternatives too. And this occurred on an already-existing post, not a new post. They searched old posts to nuke them. The whole list of alternatives that was stickied at the top of /r/redditAlternatives was deleted and d3rr had to re-write it like this to get past their new keyword filter.

This is insane! What website forbids even the mention of their competition? They've gone full authoritarian

One of the admins shadowbanned that very quickly after a WRD mod used it to point out the shadowban.

I mean, I know free speech is dead on reddit. I was hoping though, that it was a more 95% still free speech, but they seem to be sliding down that slope closer to 0% very fast.

sounds like a fun game to start playing with reddit

  1. collect list of reddit alternatives
  2. make hundreds of reddit socks
  3. spam each reddit alternative everywhere on reddit using filter evasion (thedonald.win -> the donald d0t win, saidit.net -> s a i dit (.) net)

make sure lemmy the federated reddit alternative in the list for bonus points. destroying reddit more powerfully with alternative sites as well as technological solutions

Or figure out a way to phrase an alternate site in such a way that if they shadowban the phrase they'll be censoring saying "reddit".

That's petty and a bit frightening. I really haven't seen anyone just blanket advertising by spamming links or anything so I don't think they even have an excuse to say it was to stop spam advertising. Anytime alternatives are mentioned that I have seen at least it is people asking / talking about alternatives. The timing too right when people are going to be looking for alternatives. It's just pure filtering out the competition, pathetic.

    Expect a coordinated effort to take this site offline by cutting off funding and hosting. They will post violent threats, child pornography, etc. to try and get there. I'll help out as much as I can by reporting anything I see for removal / but often it's the journos that want to write the smear article that post the crap they immediately screenshot - so not sure how much it'll help.

    Have yet to see others talking about this, but they've changed something that they're mass purging users right now. All of my many accounts, some new, the oldest being 12 years old, have been permabanned in the last 48 hours, and multiple other users I know have the same suspended message on their accounts.
