For those wondering why some get off so easy, there's some discussion here and more on the same topic.

In short: There would be too many cases to handle if everything went to court. They also don't want rape victims reliving their trauma. So most charges end in plea deals. As a consequence, the predators get lighter sentences then they deserve(in this case again and again). And for criminal justice in general, too often the innocent take lighter plea deals and do time(and get a record) if they don't think they will get a fair trial in court(because their defense sucks).
