He raves about the instructor so much that the wife knows, so obviously absolutely knows that he supposedly thought that was where her mind would immediately go regarding the question, but...

Obliviously he doesn’t actually seriously want her or anything.

This reminds me of a question on Quora (which is really short for PseudoIntellectualScrotism) that asked what men imagine when they're thinking about an attractive woman. Some idiot answers it, and because he was married, he lied through his teeth and said he simply just thinks about what she's doing or what she feels about him.
