sounds like the parents fail at life and failed the kid and did not teach her self-discipline

this is why it seems impossible to want to have a kid in this era, no one knows how to navigate away from the iphone.

I cannot even fathom this being true. If it is, then you/your kids are the severe minority. I cannot base anything off that vague comment. What apps did they use, how long ,etc. I mean, 5 years old? Seriously?....

I loaded on up with educational apps, and one dumb (easy) addictive game.
They gave up on the addictive game, but occasionally still play the educational stuff. 22 learn, baby words, abby monkey, etc etc

no worries. I think the ability to keep repeating boring AF things really helps with early learning. My boy can count to 100 and beyond, is figuring out words and spelling, knows his alphabet and a bunch of countries, animals, foods, shapes etc etc all due to those apps. They are great! Not sure what he's going to do when he reaches school age.

Two things: the phone is an interface to another world where the child can build things, but those things are much more oriented towards getting social praise etc. rather than intrinsic rewards. And, the phone is a powerful distraction device for those who have a painful life they want to be distracted from.

Everyone thinks their little angel is a genius.
Everyone is horrified when their bright, inquisitive and kind kid turns into a dull, morose teen obsessed by social trends.

Newsflash: cute preteen girl turns into manipulative bratty teen. Parents too lazy to have discipline. More at 11.
