STD is bad. If any of you haven't seen Star Trek: The Next Generation I highly recommend giving a few episodes a try.

I recommend checking out:

Season 5 Episode 22: The Inner Light

Season 3 Episode 4: Who Watches the Watchers

Season 2 Episode 9: The Measure of a Man

Well, it does point out that liberal society / workplace is under constant struggle

Didn't they already do this or have a trans character dax on DS9?

Wasn't Data pretty much agender? Given that Star Trek has transporters, and (to some extent) a post-scarcity economy with replicators, not to mention all the low-effort blue-paint aliens, adding a few trans people is hardly a novelty. Star Trek had the first interracial kiss on US TV, after all, so it has a history of addressing present-day social issues. Moral lecturing is hardly new to Star Trek. I have no problem with trans characters as long as they are well-written. But good luck with that.

While we may like to escape the brain-damage of the culture wars into an imagined distant future, science fiction is a product of today and reflects contemporary social issues. There is no getting away from it. Just give me well-written antiheroes. I do not think I will find them in Star Trek.
