Nerd rant: Star Trek Discovery jumped the shark and introduces non-binary and trans characters

“Star Trek has always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities because it believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach,” said Michelle Paradise, co-showrunner and executive producer.

Yet, they now decide to show a future where division is created among their very own cast/characters because of current human societal labels? Are they going the route of Law&Order now, creating entire plot lines that are loosely based on reality?

“We take pride in working closely with Blu del Barrio, Ian Alexander and Nick Adams at GLAAD to create the extraordinary characters of Adira and Gray, and bring their stories to life with empathy, understanding, empowerment and joy.”

I don't give a shit about THEIR STORIES or this blatant pandering. This kind of shit is so heavily politicized that it's absurd, and I believe in separating the art from the artist. Goddamnit, just let me watch my sci-fi television!

STD is bad. If any of you haven't seen Star Trek: The Next Generation I highly recommend giving a few episodes a try.

Wasn't Data pretty much agender? Given that Star Trek has transporters, and (to some extent) a post-scarcity economy with replicators, not to mention all the low-effort blue-paint aliens, adding a few trans people is hardly a novelty. Star Trek had the first interracial kiss on US TV, after all, so it has a history of addressing present-day social issues. Moral lecturing is hardly new to Star Trek. I have no problem with trans characters as long as they are well-written. But good luck with that.

While we may like to escape the brain-damage of the culture wars into an imagined distant future, science fiction is a product of today and reflects contemporary social issues. There is no getting away from it. Just give me well-written antiheroes. I do not think I will find them in Star Trek.
