Saidit.net - New features: Imgur upload button, change in subscription list for new users

Our big announcement for today is the imgur upload system. Now when you make a post, you can press the "choose file" button to upload an image directly from your computer to imgur and get the direct .jpg image link for your post, all in one action. It's awesome.

Thanks to /u/ScamCast for writing the code to do this, and to /u/d3rr for making that code fit in to our existing framework. This is a very convenient feature if you post a lot of images to saidit from your own hard drive.

Second announcement, we're changing our subscription model for new users. New users will not be subscribed to all subs anymore, a lot of people complained about this. Instead new users will be subscribed to only the best and most-used subs, a hand-picked list of about 70 subs.

In the future we plan to make the /subscribed page the default home page for new users, instead of /home. This can already be changed in your user preferences, but now it will be the default for new users. Existing users will not be affected. We will be phasing the /home page out eventually, so there will only be /all and /subscribed. The design made sense when we were first starting out and had to pool everything together to make sure people weren't missing content, but now that saidit is getting bigger we're changing to a more traditional subscription model like reddit has.

Look at the site as logged out. In the top left drop-down menu, those are the 70.

May I make a suggestion?

Why not make it so that in order for a subsaidit a user hasn't specifically subscribed or ignored to appear in the front page for a user it has to have twice the score then the rest?

It is an interesting idea, to have "breakthrough" posts in a certain sub that can get a wider audience if they do well. Maybe it could be a user preference option for the /subscribed page, to enable the showing of breakthrough posts in non-muted subs that you aren't subscribed to

I think saidit right now functions like a single forum, since at any time someone might create a new single user saidit and post something which is a likely to be shown as something in subs with higher participation, when it might not be that relevant.

However, not displaying it at all might lead to isolated communities and echo chambers. So a balance between what people are interested and being exposed to different opinions should be found.

As a practical example having an hiking sub and a scuba-diving sub, hiking people might not have interest in most scuba stuff, but really cool stuff like this: https://i.imgur.com/Ebo8Fli.gifv is still interesting. ...and you'd still get access to the best content without having to see what only hardcore fans enjoy.

I used this to upload a photo a while ago, and I found the jpg compressed to a lower size.

I hate lossy compression.

But png is fine.

I can't find this option under the text tab.

Yeah right now the uploading form only exists for url posts/links. We could add it to text posts too I suppose.
