Subs being "dead" has nothing to do with the moderation team, and everything to do with if people post there or not. I've seen more subs killed by over-active mods, than lack of mods

It most certainly has to do with moderation. Christians for example, don't want a sub that atheists can start posting porn to to spite them, and without moderators, that will happen.

Porn is against site rules, so no that won't happen

If it is not porn, it will be something. With no moderation, birgading here will be at all time high.

Mods aren't the only ones who can stop brigading

Yes they are.

No.

Admins can also stop brigading. Also users can have a big impact with their votes and comments

Users shouldn't have to deal with it and if they had a choice of not dealing with it by going somewhere else they will. One can't expect administrators to moderate subs either to the level that's needed. It's barely possible to moderate one sub, let alone every sub.

Perhaps at some scale, yes. It's been working fine for 2 years on saidit though.

But if moderators are needed they can be found. People who go out of their way to acquire moderator positions usually aren't doing so with the best of motives

Saidit is still small scale though and is attracting the first wave of a very specific subset of people. If you want to expand beyond disillusioned /r/news and /r/politics redditors though, the people want their echo chambers. For example, the first thing I looked for when I came here was /r/Christianity and I immediately noticed it was dead with no hope of it ever becoming anything more than a wasteland.
