Yeah I'm removing it... this is a 24/7 job where I make no money and get yelled at constantly for letting the place suck. What joy

We love you, man. Thanks for doing all this bullshit behind the scenes. The site wouldn't be here without you.

It's the nature of critics. Happy people rarely speak up while angry people often do. Multiply that by the number of reddit users with mental problems, whose only therapy is screaming at others and sharing their unhappiness, you start to understand.

Don't let the bastards win. All their hard work disappearing and their plan of reporting Saidit to the upstream provider is failing. This is exactly the aggressive moderation we need to stay around. Deputize some moderators if it's getting to be too much. I could dedicate an hour a day to this site.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I was glad we could negotiate for saidit to remain on the server too. I appreciate your offer to help, I'll consider it.

You will have to delegate some mod responsibilities sooner or later.

I have, but those people keep leaving once they see what it's like to actually do this job...

Yeah perhaps. The thing is most people who desperately want to mod, should not be mods because they always go on power trips. The best mods are the people who don't really like doing it. But they're the hardest to find too.

I realize you are busy but perhaps you could create a front page that is exclusively promoted content. Have that be the default front page and if someone wants to change that they can go in the options and select top to be their front page. This way you can have quality content when a new user comes to check out the website.

You could even create a back end system that automatically promotes content based on the up votes of select accounts that aren't trolls.

And it would actually be cool if content that was on the top of other "tabs" would be removed from the promoted tab so that you could more easily find a larger variety of content. So when you hit that other tab you aren't getting the same content again, and having to scroll past it.

It's an interesting idea, but then legally we become a "publisher" if we hand-select the things that are approved, in my understanding, and then the legal rules that apply to the website become much more strict and I bear more liability.

I like your ideas though, keep thinking...

      [–]Canbot 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Youtube does this exact thing and they maintain their public platform protections. There is a distinction between promoting content and blocking it. Even if it is not the front page, but rather a tab for curated content I think it would go a long way to provide an oasis during times of attack.

      [–]magnora7 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not bad ideas, I'll think about it some more.

Removing is different from approving. Blacklisting is standard on platforms. Whitelisting is what makes people a publisher

        [–]imperative_speech 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

The important thing about free speech is the imperative or cautionary speech, not necessarily the frivolous. In this regard, users would seek to defend their position while other forces seek to clamp down on them.

For example, if warning of martial law or impending doom; those that are criminals may not want anyone to be able to say anything. That is why reasonable websites need to remain for cautionary reasons, otherwise criminals can get away with the frivolity of sabotage.

Thank you for removing it! It looks like the spammer got tired anyways. I appreciate everything you do for the site.

If the spam resumes or gets really bad, maybe have a short-term moratorium on creating new accounts? Not a perfect fix, but it would get the job done.

        [–]magnora7 20 insightful - 4 fun20 insightful - 3 fun21 insightful - 4 fun -  (5 children)

Thanks! It was about 150 links (across about 75 user names). Glad it's gone.

Yeah we can turn account creation off... but all 75 accounts were registered 2 weeks ago. These people came prepared to do exactly what they're doing. Pretty sad tbh

        [–]Aureus 9 insightful - 3 fun9 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 3 fun -  (2 children)

Shit, don't mean to ruin your day but looks like the spammers are back. This time they're on a "u" name.

Their usernames are all sequential words, made around the same time. There must be a way to use that against the spammers, maybe identify and ban them pre-emptively.

Don't sweat it though, if this is keeping you up you should get some sleep. SaidIt can survive a little spam for a few hours.

        [–]magnora7 8 insightful - 4 fun8 insightful - 3 fun9 insightful - 4 fun -  (1 child)

Thanks. I appreciate the kind words and the heads up. I'm going to be doing this all night if need be. And now d3rr is alerted to the spam problem as well.

Yeah that'd be a smart way to do it, thanks for the suggestion. I may implement that feature in the future.

The people whining are the people that hate that you're awesome.

Is there a way for to use reddit API something to report users en masse?

Looks like there are several tools to detect porn in images/content: https://www.programmableweb.com/category/adult/api, https://github.com/yahoo/open_nsfw

Maybe there is a way that sophisticated users could help (I'd consider myself mildly sophisticated, and willing to help).

As long as you leave all the other stuff behind and obey the site rules (which are tighter than the rules on IP2) then you're more than welcome to comment.

          [–]HibikiBlack 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Hang in there Magnora. You are not alone, we are all in this together.

          [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

the only reason you made money is cause ip2 wanted good servers cause we made the traffic, now that we agreed to move to another site (didnt ban us) everyones gonna unsub so youll make even less.

They will be migrating to their new home within hours. This is just their way of saying goodbye after M7 and D3rr let them use the server for ten months.

The head of IP2 didn't say but just said they have found a place and he will announce it a few hours from now. They self-describe as Incels mostly.

Block the users, they will be banned before long.

          [–]suckitreddit[S] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Thanks for the reply. I did! But it's constant, and I don't want others to see it.

          [–]Questionable 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

There are only around 50 of them. Once you block them all, your front page will be back to normal.

          [–]nantucketghost 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Just block the user. Real simple
