First thanks for your work. I don't have specific things I'd like to see but interested in anything which makes it decentralized and helps to stop the same things as happened to Reddit happening here if it gets big.

Hey, just happy to provide a useful service, doing my bit to try and help improve things.

and helps to stop the same things as happened to Reddit happening here if it gets big.

This is a big focus as well for sure. d3rr and I see both reddit and voat (and digg) as cautionary tales about how things can go wrong.

Saidit's new voting system, lack of ads (and thus lack of selling out), admins dedicated to this grassroots structure instead of chasing ad revenue, and other advantages including the site moderation being based on the pyramid of debate, will put saidit on a better path in the long run. But if anyone has an idea to add another defense against this type of decay, I'm all ears.

Do you have a backup plan if donations aren't enough to keep the lights on?

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes. Our total expenses are low enough at the moment where I can fund it out of pocket for a while, but after that runs out, that's it. We really hope to do this through user donations. We try our best to streamline costs to keep them as low as possible, and we're doing pretty good at $45/mo (and we just upgraded our RAM so we should be good for a while), although we're looking at potentially adding another $25/mo so we can have a proper dev environment and mirror of saidit code because we mostly do live testing right now on the site and that kind of limits the scope of the coding experiments we can try. But we might figure out a way to do it for free. Maybe. We are trying our best.

We are also looking in to building a cryptocurrency for saidit, that would be used for tipping (but not voting) and people could mine it in-browser in a tab if they choose, and earn some for both themselves and for saidit as a whole, as well as earning it when tipped. Then if this cryptocurrency takes on a real tradeable value, this could help pay for some of the operating expenses. But that project is probably a year away from being finished, at least.

So between all that we have 3 layers of protection.

hurray!! for the mobile apps, can't wait, I know it will make me want to view and participate more often!

I agree with /u/trytonotjustlurk decentralizing could be a good idea, maybe on zeronet or i2p for example. Censorship proof is important! Look at what is happening with Gab.

Keep up the good work /u/magnora7 and team!! We appreciate you!!

Great call on the character count on the title submission box. Saves me a ton of time from going to:

While figuring out titles on reddit.

Glad you appreciate it! I always found the lack of a counter a bit annoying too, luckily it was an easy 1 hour fix

[–]HibikiBlack 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

Well, this may be a little too much, but I wish for a more personalized profile. Like being able to choose an avatar and things like that. Besides that, everything is cool!

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Avatar pictures, interesting idea. I guess your profile picture would go next to every post as well as comment you make?

I know some subs use "flair" and other pictures, maybe we could retool a system like that to be site-wide. Probably won't happen anytime soon, but that's how I'd approach it at least.

Just an idea, but if you (or anyone reading this) wants to experiment getting the flair system working properly in one sub, then we could spread it to be site-wide from that example.

Eventually people would choose their "flair" in their user profile, and it'd show after their name, in every sub.

I found this about how to do the flair: https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/wiki/flair

Not sure what is required to get flair working on a new subreddit, much less a new subsaidit.... if you (or anyone) figures out how to make flair work properly on a single subsaidit, and then teach me how to do it, I will take the effort to figure out how to make it site-wide if that's a feature the community wants.

[–]HibikiBlack 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I see, well keep up the good work then guys!

Not sure what is required to get flair working on a new subreddit, much less a new subsaidit....

I've been looking into that for the mod guide, couldn't get it to work quickly so I got on to other things. Seems to be easily doable though, will dive into it after the gamma release.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

That would be super awesome if you could get it working and tested and stuff. I don't think it would be terribly difficult to stretch it out from that sub model to a site-wide model, once someone can prove it to work on the sub level.

[–]Mnemonic 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

Well, I'm not sure about that.

How it (should) work (as far as I understand ATM) is having the flair images uploaded in the stylesheet page and with some CSS give it an id (or class) you then have to assign (as mod) to a 'flair'-name and then (if it's open to public) anyone can assign one of the made flairs to themselves (or a post if it's a post/comment flair).

But yeah, you will hear it when it works ;) Because having the power of the flair, I could shill my sub in overdrive. Psst! Hey, want some flair eh? Come on over to /s/Internet

Best of luck! If you get extremely super stuck on one specific part that requires our help, let us know.

I have seen flair working here if that helps. The greymarket guys had it all figured out but they are no longer with us. I don't think anyone else has bothered or I would link you to it. Likewise I've never figured it out personally.

[–]Mnemonic 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I can't find the greymarket and I broke saidit looking for it :p

An option to get notifications on comments on an article.

Like for instance if I like an article but am also curious if someone else has something to say about. So a 'save' like 'get replies' link?

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Hm interesting idea. We are working on a new sort, where all posts on saidit will be sorted in order of which ones have the newest comment in the thread.

So that feature would kind of be similar. Would you be happy with that instead? We'll think about adding your idea to our to-do list as well.

[–]Mnemonic 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I'm happy anyway, so that's not a problem!

Many thanks and much appreciation!

[–]allie 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I founded an Art sub but when I'm posting it doesn't show up in "my subscribed subs" so I doubt it's showing up in anyone else's. So it's dead as a door nail.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I've seen it come up before! It's a cool sub

[–]Mnemonic 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It does show up in mine (I subscribed). Maybe, even tough you're mod, you somehow accidentally unsubscribed?

[–]allie 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Oops. Yep, that was it.

Haha alright we'll look in to doing that. Thanks for the idea

      [–]athrowforthecentury 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Seems I was subscribed to a lot of subs automatically upon signing up, and there is no accessible sub/unsub button in the subsaidits. I have no idea how to subscribe or unsubscribe to any subsaidit.

      [–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Everyone is subscribed to all subs when their account is created. If you go to any given sub, you can see a green or red "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" button on the bar on the right, toward the top.

Alternatively you can go to www.saidit.net/s/ to see all the subs, and the subscribe and unsubscribe buttons are on the left of every sub listed. That page also has tabs to manage your subscribed subs. Hope that helps.

      [–]athrowforthecentury 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

      Thank you!! It does.

Include a preview comments feature that displays comments in the revised format, and confirms that the comments look current; before they are posted.

OK good idea. /u/d3rr maybe we could make it so "turn off chat" disables only the box and not the "chat in new tab" link.

        [–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Sure, that's an easy change. I'll add it to the list.

Cool man. Sorry about the dev server being down last night, I'm mad it wasn't working when you wanted to try out stuff. Hopefully next time you try my router will behave :)

        [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No worries man, I had plenty of other stuff to work on.
