I'm Un-Modding From My Subs About Power, Corruption & Lies
(Power, Corruption & Lies is a classic 1980's new wave album by New Order.)
Earlier in this year of maximum distractions, I mentioned to M7 in the spring or summer that in the fall I was going to focus on more alternatives and solutions. Obviously it took longer than anticipated. I needed to distill and clarify some concepts. Plus in October I got 2 cats, re-did my place and my gear set up, tested a bunch of lame browsers for months, re-did my storage, and I'm working on a basement year-round food garden. All on financial fumes. Then I fucked up my back. Yet my spirits and goals remain high.
My former subs on power:
I created other subs and un-modded (due to M7's lame arbitrary max of 40) to have a place to post. If you're interested in modding them you may contact /u/magnora7 to beg to be master of those domains. I mention them here to remind folks that they exist and IMO some should be utilized.
FYI, on entertainment:
If you wish to co-mod them, contact their new moderators and/or magnora7.
I've invited a privileged couple dozen SaidIt users who have earned my respect, seem above the fray, non-partisan, and insightful. A few is a monopoly and a handful is a gang - but a couple dozen and you may achieve a reasonably balanced team that might even reach consensus on many matters. If I've overlooked you then either it was my terrible mistake, an oversight, I don't know you enough yet, or it was on purpose. /u/diogenesjunior was banned for some unclear reason and /u/anescapee seems to have self-deleted. If you've been selected and don't like any of the others, I'm curious to know why (perhaps my experience of "knowing" them was too little), though I'm no longer mod and I'm sorry to leave that dilemma with you. On the plus side, all mod activity is 100% transparent.
Obviously, I don't run SaidIt, but if I did, I'd nominate these couple dozen people to be benevolent leaders, the watchers who also watch each other. I'd still have veto, but my burdens and responsibilities would be dispersed, democratic, and much more fair. Through open and transparent discussion we could determine if I made any errors or omissions and the list could be adjusted. Some people, even benevolent ones, may not even be aware of how they are perceived or the games they subconsciously play, so honest fair discourse is critical among these leaders. Democratically they can develop solutions to openly resolve small issues before they grow. You'll hear more about my ideas for democratic next-gen forums soon.
I wouldn't expect everyone invited to join, much less wish to join all of the subs. The option is there. So far I've invited M7 and D3 to nearly all of my subs, and only D3 had accepted a handful, early on. Feel free to delete the invites, ignore them, save them just in case, or simply accept if you have the interest and inclination.
I'm hoping to bring more awareness to these topical issues. If being co-mod helps you feel some responsibility or helps elevate the subs in your consciousness then that's great. If nothing changes, c'est la vie. My habits will be changing in a big way soon, so I won't be sharing as I once did. Those subs are no longer "mine", so feel free to change the CSS, sidebox, etc. I apologize for not moderating people or my subs, if you care about that. I've never needed to "own" a sub to call shit out when I saw it. IMO, there should be no ownership of subs in a forum community (again, more on this soon).
I forgot that I was going to remove the CSS from all of them to leave only the banners (and maybe the voting numbers). However, that would require more concentration than I can currently manage (my recent month of back pain is finally getting better) to rework the code. I'll keep my custom CSS on a couple subs regardless. Over the last 3-4 months I've tried different browsers (they all suck) and discovered discrepancies with custom CSS. Between those browser quirks, not getting support to finish my 2 big CSS themes, and finally focusing down my options, my interest in building custom CSS is shelved. I may be convinced to resume later and/or do new banners, etc.
Soon I'll be posting more revolutionary ideas, interactive projects, open discussions, share old and new ideas for subs, and other groundbreaking stuff - all regarding alternatives and solutions to build a better resistance and future. Keep your eyes open for this important series because I want all feedback. I hope they'll be more entertaining and engaging than this housekeeping post, written in part, still in the fog of pain.
