I nominate: /u/send_nasty_stuff; /u/AmericanMuskrat ; and /u/soundsituation

I think they understand how to build community engagement among people with widely differing points of view.

I also nominate the return of /u/d3rr and /u/AXXA....

[–]magnora7[S] 11 insightful - 3 fun11 insightful - 2 fun12 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

I would also 2nd the return of d3rr and AXXA. I thought they were doing great. But it's up to them.

I'd prefer it if people self-nominated, so I can know they're actually interested in doing the job. Because this job takes some tenacity and motivation to not get burned out. But if they're interested I will consider them.

Thanks for the nomination socks. I really don't think I'd have the time and I'm a bit short on some of the tech skills. However, I'd certainly be willing to help out in an advisory capacity. Maybe if there was some type of committee or private sub that discussed problems/solutions I could be of service.

Bro. I agree with many of your arguments.

The shills who want to demolish the site would love to misrepresent the evidence based views of the site admins.

I strongly oppose both censorship, and self-censorship.

I also strongly oppose handing our enemies red meat to misrepresent the community.

Please consider editing your moderator flair before becoming an advisor, etc.

No disrespect intended.

Edit: socks could be setting you up.

Edit: socks could be setting you up.

That did cross my mind which is another reason I wouldn't really be interested in any type of admin position. I wouldn't want to compromise the site in any way.

Please consider editing your moderator flair before becoming an advisor, etc. No disrespect intended.

Also another reason why I wouldn't really want any type of leadership roll. Any position or duty that makes me tone down my beliefs is not really my cup of tea. I can be tactful in one on one interactions but I'm never going to hide my beliefs. I'm a proud fascist and I'm not ashamed of fascist or National Socialist symbols.

No disrespect intended.

None taken!

I'll drink too that.
Cheers!

Maybe if there was some type of committee or private sub that discussed problems/solutions

Avoid that like the plague! That's what r/defaultmods is and the beginning of the cabals that destroyed digg, reddit, and then ruqqus. It starts out innocently enough but it never ends well.

[–]send_nasty_stuff 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You're never going to avoid greasy backroom dealings and all the power getting steered into a couple people's hands. You just need to hope that the people that do run the show don't get 'controlled' or co-opted or killed (like Swartz). Admin needs to have a vision and stick with it. The admin should also fear the community to a degree.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (3 children)

Socks? You're not going to nominate ol' Tom?

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

lol - sure, you're hereby nominated.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

declined!

No ring of admin power for me.

Gotta tend to muh forest.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Well - you should get points for humor. Sorry...

[–]Dashing-Dove 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (7 children)

Saidit is an important platform, and if the expected time commitment isn't greater than ~20-30 minutes per day, I wouldn't mind helping to enforce content rules and patrol against spam, having done so for a few popular forums in the past.

[–]magnora7[S] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

Thank you for your offer. I see your account is a year old and you have many good quality comments, and comment on a wide variety of subs. And it's good you've done forum work before. I am definitely interested in you becoming a content admin.

What we are looking for is maybe 5-10 minutes a day, twice a day. Not a lot of time, just that it's done regularly is the important part. We just need lots of people, each doing a little on a regular basis. I just wrote a post detailing more of what's involved here: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/8w8i/anyone_want_to_help_be_content_admin_for_saidit/wwq4

Let me know if that sounds like something you'd be willing to help out with.

[–]Dashing-Dove 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Thank you for running the site. The requirements sound manageable and should fit into my daily routine, so I'll gladly help out. If further information is needed, or there are rules for admin behavior and enforcement beyond the posted terms and content policy page, do let me know. Otherwise, there's some Singapore property rental spam waiting for the bin.

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Sounds great. Thank you for offering, we'd love to have you on board. There's not a ton else to explain, but I am going to make a rule clarification page for saidit content administrators (and users to understand how the rules are applied). If you have questions about the saidit rules or the content admin position, please PM me and I'll add those questions to the upcoming rule clarification page.

As far as actually giving you the position, d3rr has to do this in the backend software (or I can figure it out but I am on vacation so I don't have my setup for saidit backend access right now) so it may be another day or two before we can officially give you the powers. But if you hold tight, I will actually start appointing people in a day or two when we can change it in the software.

Looking forward to your help, even if just a few minutes a day! Thank you! I got the singapore real estate one, thanks for the heads up :)

I just finished writing and posting an FAQ about how to be a content administrator. It should answer all questions you might have about being a content admin: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/8wao/saidit_content_admin_rules_clarification_page/

Have a look at the details and if it all works for you, let me know and I will add you to our content admin team within the next few days.

[–]Dashing-Dove 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Nothing in the FAQ looks immediately amiss or confusing, and allowing content admins to limit their involvement to enforcing clear cut rules violations is a good idea. While the pyramid of debate is a useful concept, it's also subjective and introduces potential for excessive censorship and misjudgement. So feel free to add me whenever, and I'll come aboard with a light touch.

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Sounds wonderful, I'll send you more information here in a minute.

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Hello Dashing-Dove,

D3rr and I have just finished patching a bug that applied only to the admin page, so now we are ready to begin adding new content admins. You should be added as a content admin in the software within 24 hours (basically whenever d3rr is able to get to it).

Check out this new welcome page: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/8wrq/welcome_new_saidit_content_admins/

We're basically ready to begin! Please message me if you have any questions about anything at all and I'll be happy to help.

[–]thoughtcriminal 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (22 children)

What is involved exactly? How many hours/day would someone be expected to devote?

I might be willing to help out though I doubt you want me based on my recent post.

[–]magnora7[S] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (21 children)

As much or as little as they want. It's not about how many hours they do it, any bit helps. Even if a few people each did just 5 mins once a day, it'd be a huge help. Seriously.

Content admins basically go to www.saidit.net/new and www.saidit.net/comments and check the most recent content, and remove anything that violates the saidit rules, which are here: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/j1/the_saiditnet_terms_and_content_policy/

I'll be writing a "rules clarification" page soon, sort of an FAQ for how exactly to apply the rules. So everyone is on the same page about exactly how to apply the rules.

Most posts removed are flagged by users, so admins simply click a bright red 'spam' button to remove it. And then you can ban users if they're just botspam or clearly openly breaking the rules (advocating violence, spamming, etc).

But that's it. If we had 10 people who each checked once a day, we'd have this thing whipped.

[–]thoughtcriminal 7 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 2 fun8 insightful - 3 fun -  (10 children)

I wouldn't mind helping out on those terms, though I would probably need some clarifications on the rules first. I browse /new frequently.

[–]magnora7[S] 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (7 children)

Sounds great! I will be making the rules clarification page soon. If you have specific questions about the rules (and it sounds like you do), please send me a PM with it so I can answer it on the upcoming rules clarification page that will be used to help train new content admins. Thanks. Looking forward to answering your questions and possibly having you as a content admin.

[–]Trajan 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

I could help out there. My free time is a bit up and down, but checking comments should be easy enough with decent guidance on what to shitcan.

I don't mind doing 5 mins a day.

I'm maybe a bit too liberal free speech wise but I can certainly spot the spam and ads and clear them off.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Awesome, sounds great. Thank you. I'll send you some more information here soon. I'm writing the Content Admin Rule Clarification Page right now. Then you can see if it's up your alley. We'd love to have another person on the team doing 5 mins a day here and there, just removing ads and spam, that's exactly what we need.

Would you be fine with it if someone only removed rule-breaking content they stumble upon? I'd love to help, but I'm not interested in spending time looking for posts to remove. At most I'd occasionally check a global moderation queue if there is such a thing.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, that'd be helpful too!

There is no global moderation queue, I'm sorry to say. The software doesn't exist for it in saidit code. Since it all has to be found in the wild anyway, your technique works just as well as going to /new or /comments. So that'd be great.

I'll contact you soon with more information.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Nice. I think we've got enough for this round, we've got 10 total. In a couple months when a few drop out we'll probably do another round of looking for content admins, so I'll be in touch then.

It feels like a mistake to ask for volunteers, since only people with way too much time on their hands coupled with an eagerness to go on a power trip will likely respond to that opportunity, i.e. college kids and people who are unemployed.

Users who are respectable and reasonable are also going to have a lot of other responsibilities, and so won't be able to give you much time. That's asking for abuse and/or poor review decisions, which is a problem Reddit's always had with its moderators.

I always like how the old site Slashdot did it, and more recently the Stackexchange sites. "Content admins" were randomly selected from users with karma over some threshold, and allowed to review a few posts. And then their privilege expired and wouldn't renew for some set period of time. Sort of like US jury duty.

That strategy seems like a good way to balance finding those with the time and resources to donate to the site while limiting the potential for abuse.

At worst, it ends up functioning exactly like this post, an open call for volunteers, only automated, so the admins don't have to waste their time manually vetting anyone. At best, it's even better at finding a wider range of users who might not have seen the admin post who can donate some small amount of time, if not much.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I think asking for volunteers is fine, but hopefully M7 has a vetting process in place behind-the-scenes that he'll use to gauge their ability and intent ... now, and as time goes on.

Sleeper agents are a real thing on social media platforms, and I've seen and experienced it both on Reddit and SaidIt. Don't underestimate dedicated trolls and their desire to manipulate.

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think that's a smart way to do it, but I actually tried this last time and was not able to find a sufficient number of voluenteers through this method.

We do have ways to get rid of bad admins, so if there are bad ones they will be quickly weeded out, and the damage they did will be undone as nothing is fully deleted by content admins, only removed. So I think it might be a bit rocky, but I think it will be a net benefit.

I enjoy the spam removal and would be willing to do more, but I feel that if I were given the responsibilities of policing the PoD, I would be a hatchet man and treat every instance in black and white. The spam and illegal activity removal, I can do.

[–]Canbot 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Sounds good. I don't know what to ask, but what I expect is that there will be some additional buttons available to clean up spam and such. And the plan is to go through new regularly to clean it up. I guess we can just all do what is convenient and if there are gaps in coverage make adjustments accordingly.

[–]Vulptex 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (14 children)

I'm not really free enough to fill an actual position, but I could help clean up some spam and stuff whenever I come on, which I do see a lot of. Not sure that would mean much though, and if we need to contact irl or share information I'm not really comfortable doing that.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Hey that's all we really need a lot of the time, is just spam and obvious stuff. It would actually mean a lot. Just 5 mins twice a day, or something along those lines, would be great. You definitely don't have to share any irl personal info with me of course, this is just all saidit usernames.

I will send you some more info about it in the next day or two and then if you want to you can give the position a try.

That's definitely manageable, I'm usually on saidit a lot more than that.

Great! Check out the Content Admin FAQ I messaged you and make sure it all looks good to you, and I'll be in touch in a day or two when we can add you as a content admin.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Hello Vulptex,

D3rr and I have just finished patching a bug that applied only to the admin page, so now we are ready to begin adding new content admins. You should be added as a content admin in the software within 24 hours (basically whenever d3rr is able to get to it).

Check out this new welcome page: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/8wrq/welcome_new_saidit_content_admins/

We're basically ready to begin! Please message me if you have any questions about anything at all and I'll be happy to help.

[–]Vulptex 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Thanks!

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

I just finished writing and posting an FAQ about how to be a content administrator. It should answer all questions you might have about being a content admin: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/8wao/saidit_content_admin_rules_clarification_page/

Have a look at the details and if it all works for you, let me know and I will add you to our team within the next few days.

That looks great. /u/AmericanMuskrat /u/soundsituation /u/Zapped la_cues you have been doing an amazing job. Please take a look. Please let magnora7 know if you are interested. magnora7 these people have been and still are doing an amazing job. They are continuing to take care of all of the main subs that you created. Please give them special consideration. They have each proven to be invaluable stewards of Saidit. Thank you.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I'd rather you and D3 do it tbh.

[–]AXXA 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Let me add that magnora7 has the full endorsement of both d3rr and myself. I encourage you to try the experience. You will truly learn the breadth and depth of Saidit. However choose what works best for you.

I would be willing to remove the obvious violations, but I feel that I am too inexperienced with moderating to make decisions on things such as name calling and ad hominem.

[–]AXXA 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

That's great. Please let magnora7 know.

[–]Zapped 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I wish you could resolve your differences with M7 and continue to build on all the hard work you've done here, but I wouldn't want you to take on anything that doesn't make you happy.

[–]AXXA 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Our differences have been resolved. /u/magnora7 will continue to build on all the hard work we've all done here. He has always been the one with the vision. All I ever did was to try to carry that vision forward. That is why I'm very happy that you are joining his team of content admins.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Admin would make it easier to do what I do already, although I feel like I can remove most of the spam without it.

Managing other users isn't particularly a talent of mine or something I want to do.

I think you'd be decent at it, if you're interested in helping out at this level let me know. It wouldn't be much different from moderating a ton of subs, it's true.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Sure, sign me up. I do all the stuff in the FAQ anyways and I'm here a lot.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Alright great! I'll be in touch in a few days when we can add you as content admin in software.

We have a report button. I think you would be better served by appealing to all users to uphold the pyramid of debate by using that button to report infringments so a moderator can take action when requested. In other words if no one complains then it is not a problem and moderators should stay out of it. You have been at this long enough to know every powertroll in the universe dreams of possessing those tools that they can censor and ban people they argue and disagree with while using alts and if you are not careful that is what will happen here.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, that's mostly good, except in the cases where the content admin catches it before a user reports it. No sense in waiting around for a user to report it if it's obviously against the rules. And there are a lot of false reports, so user reports aren't always the best indicator either.

[–]Ehhhhhh 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Would it help if I look through and report more spam?

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Yes, definitely, as long as you are willing to do it regularly. Check out this FAQ and see if it looks good to you and we'd love to have you on the team: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/8wao/saidit_content_admin_rules_clarification_page/

[–]Ehhhhhh 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I might fail #3 as SOMEone said that I was dragging down the pyramid, which I didn't really agree with.

I can just report more and watch for easy crap like spam and porn, though.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

We mostly need help with spam and porn and easy stuff, so that sounds perfect. In a day or two I'll be in touch and you can try some content admin work.

Nope. But you guys should get your mods under control. Apparently they are banning people for calling people cunts.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

On which sub

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I dunno. The mods have been fair for me. I just hear people talking about getting banned. And I call people names. And I am going to personally go crazy if I get banned. Not like crazy threaten you guys. But crazy like pull my hair out.

I came here hoping to just chill and call people names, and shoot shit.

[–]noice 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I'd be glad to help out as a content admin. I'm reading up on the FAQ, let me know next steps

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Sounds great, if the FAQ looks good to you, we can add you to our team soon noice and you can try being a content admin.
