I thought the point of religion was to transcend the concerns of the body, not to wallow in them.

If religion were synonymous with spirituality then, yes. However, today's new and improved religion has transcended the trappings of spiritual constraints. Experts agree that failure to uncouple religion from spirituality causes cancer in starving orphans and grandmas. It poses an existential threat to OurDemocracy®.
