Saidit.net — Feb 17, 2019 — New Feature: Expandos (media expanding buttons) and thumbnails now support 6 new media providers - Vimeo, Bitchute, SoundCloud, d.tube, Peertube, and Imgur albums
submitted 5 years ago by magnora7 from self.SaidIt
We are happy to announce Saidit now supports 6 additional media providers with our expando buttons - Vimeo, Bitchute, SoundCloud, d.tube, Peertube, and Imgur albums. Reddit has had 10 years to work on this feature and d3rr did it in less than a week!
Here are some examples of the new buttons in action. Any time a compatible link is posted to a post or comment anywhere on saidit, the grey button comes up showing the media provider. Clicking the grey button expands the media to full size, where it can conveniently play right in the page.

Also another new feature is that our thumbnail system for posts is now smarter. So if you post a selfpost with a wiki link in it, the thumbnail system will now use an image from that wiki link as your thumbnail image next to your selfpost. This will add a lot of visual media to saidit's main page.
As always, leave any questions or comments below!

Nice.
If option "open links in a new window" is enabled in settings, it opens a new tab/window with a javascript string-URL while expanding and showing the video in the original tab/window.
I assume it's serverside, turned off the option and video expansion worked flawless.
Very nice.

Yeah; the target="_blank" (I'm rusty in HTML; may not be exactly this!) should not be served for such links.
target="_blank"

Fuck yeah bro. Let's make this place grow into a formidable competitor to Reddit & Facebook. Spread the word if there's any way to do it that hasn't been done already. Thanks!

Wow. That's pretty. Messy, but pretty.
/u/d3rr, you are a genius. I'd never have noticed that in the PeerTube URLs, nor thought to match for something that looked like a UUID. That's elegant. You even cleaned up some of the surrounding code while you were at it!

Agreed. D3rr really nailed this project. It's fantastic.

Thanks man. Yeah the regex UUID matching kinda rubbed me wrong, but luckily a friendly user here encouraged me to push on through https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/bkw/could_we_have_peertube_oneboxing_like_youtube/mdr
Go PeerTube!

Congrats on all this.
I don't understand the last bit about the thumbnails. What is a "selfpost" and wiki you mean like Wikipedia, Infogalactic, etc or do you mean the SaidIt wiki? I thought it was already doing that, (though often with random results - ie. Truther Top 20 Movies had an image that was far down on the list).
This might be too late to help you, but I recently added an image downloader to my Brave Browser. Sometimes there are background images that you can't normally right-click save. These image downloaders dig out those images with a manager too. I'm guessing some might be open source if you wanted to borrow features.
I don't know if this is related or completely different, but it'd be neat to be able to use SVGs and GIFs for the CSS. Animated banners, buttons, etc. It could get keyrazie!

A self-post is a text post. Basically, the thumbnail will be taken from wiki links in non-link posts if those posts contain a link.

Full gif support is on our list. Maybe we'll support svg too but that's harder because they can have embedded javascript that needs to be stripped/sanitized. Svg isn't supported in a lot of systems because of this.

Bummer. .AI files are for Adobe Illustrator. .SVG are much simpler and I'd figured pretty basic. They rarely load properly in Illustrator. I'm bummed they can get loaded with crap. I wonder how Wikimedia Commons handles it. To find the answer to that, maybe watch this space for a week or so... https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#SVG_and_embedded_javascript_stripping

Got a hit. Don't know if this helps.

That is helpful, having a good example. Thanks man.
You might find a lot more good examples in the the open source Wikimedia family, and if you seek decentralized ideas Everipedia is also open source.
