I just found out about this site. Glad there is an alt to Reddit. They're banning all the subs i like. Congrats on the 4k, i hope more people join. And i will do my best to spam the URL on Twitter. We need Saidit!

[–]Johnytheanarchist 17 insightful - 3 fun17 insightful - 2 fun18 insightful - 3 fun -  (11 children)

Unfortunately the majority or redditors don’t even realize saidit is a thing. If we continue to push links onto reddit we can really accelerate the growth of this place

Share on SaidIt then share the SaidIt on Reddit. = Reverse Cowpoke.

This is a quality idea

Not the best idea right now, admins are actively removing Reddit alternatives in the AMA at least.

[–]gristle 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

What, really?

That should definitely trigger a mass-migration not unlike the one that caused the demise of Digg.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

i think we should revisit and question the narrative of what happened to digg. The story had been that they had users secretly plotting to push conservative news to the front and then people found out and left. What I think actually happened was rich corporations bought it out and closed it on purpose because they were consolidating the internet.

What I think actually happened was rich corporations bought it out and closed it on purpose because they were consolidating the internet.

That's super obviously what happened. They kowtowed to advertisers, and tried to make more profit, and squeezed out real users in the process. I think pretty much everyone is in agreement that that's what happened. I've literally never heard the first story you said some people believe.

Best reddit alternative ever! I just hope theres no censorship here!

[–]iLuvJews 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There are lots of users who've created there accounts since all the censorship which has occured since the NZ shooting, they post almostly exclusively about banning people who talk about the NZ shooting.

Hmm...

Check my post history for who I'm referring to.

Following the WPD crowd is how I just found this place. I knew them trying to go to Voat would crash and burn. Now they seem to want something they control.

Honestly, Saidit sounds like what I wanted Voat to be when I first went there during the FPH ban. The dual upvote system here is interesting too.

[–]Greedeater 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Not a control thing per se, just no-one above us to shut it down.

[–]Farseli 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think we might be saying the same thing in two different ways.

If there is someone above you that can shut you down then you aren't really in control. It's not like a power-hunger situation, just wanting actual control over the situation/existence of the space.

[–]Tim 10 insightful - 4 fun10 insightful - 3 fun11 insightful - 4 fun -  (2 children)

Really hoping this can gain traction, since it seems like a nice alternative. I definitely like the native dark theme.

[–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Top right icon (https://infogalactic.com/info/File:Icon_Night_Mode_Dark_Theme.svg) can chage it to day.

I still haven't finished it but this is a general encyclopedic article about SaidIt: https://infogalactic.com/info/SaidIt

[–]1234 11 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 0 fun12 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Lol I just missed really being here from the start. I was the 2400th (ish) redditor of all time on my other account.

I'm sad what happened over there. I remember when there were no subreddits or mods And I hate censorship. So this seems like a good alternative to me.

[–]magnora7[S] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Nice, I was also very early in reddit, in the first 0.01% of accounts with my very old account, probably soon after you.

Seeing all you've seen on reddit over the years I'm sure you'll enjoy the freedoms we have on saidit. :)

[–]1234 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm loving it. Definitely going to proselytize about it! This is almost like old Reddit.

[–]Bergderp 10 insightful - 3 fun10 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 3 fun -  (7 children)

Honestly, this is just a random account

Im from reddit and things are going pretty badly over there especially since they started banning subs after the nz incident, my biggest concern was when they started targetting r/piracy.

So i just want to ask a few questions about saidit

  1. How" free" is the freedom? In short one of the things i did not like about reddit was how some subreddit (t_d) kept brigading other subreddits and its pretty tiring seeing them and worst of all is that reddit is not banning them at all. Are there gonna be some rules against stuff like this and most of all prevention of these behavior in the future?

  2. What features are coming in the future?

Reddit had a system which allows other user to reward a gold or platinum which lets redditors access premium stuff, will there be something similar or no?

Currently only has these questions in mind. Probably will ask more in the future

[–]ikidd 11 insightful - 4 fun11 insightful - 3 fun12 insightful - 4 fun -  (1 child)

So you want more bans of things you disagree with, and the ridiculous gold system as well? why leave?

[–]Bergderp 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

im not saying i want "more bans" or" gold system" im just curious on how saidit will deal with subs that would purposely ruin other subs or how we can reward others for their discussion

Sorry if i wasnt too clear on my part.

And the reason i left reddit is because they started censoring discussions and banning people left and right, some of the mods will completely silent you if your opinion differ from them and the fact that they clearly abuse the system is tiring.

[–]Farseli 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Based on the Welcome thread: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/

"Free" as long as users keep to the upper levels of the pyramid of debate

https://saidit.net/static/debatepyramid.jpg

There is no downvoting to censor with, just upvoting if you like and ignoring if you don't (and are unable to reply or debate in a way that keeps to the upper levels of the pyramid).

It sounds like administrative action is reserved for people that consistently drag conversation down to the bottom of the pyramid.

[–]JasonCarswell 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

You get it.

For a glimpse of a recent controversy, one person with multiple accounts is always posting stuff like "The Jews did 9/11" and we're simply discussing whether or not it's a potential threat to the future of SaidIt's security - whether "The Jews" will have the power an influence to one day look back through the SaidIt vaults to censor us.

We're not even debating whether all or some or none of them did it, or if better words like Zionists should be used, and we haven't even put it to a group vote much less discuss disciplinary actions.

SaidIt is a classy joint. With freeshpeaches. Don't mess with Texas or SaidIt.

[–]YouSaidWhat 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

What did I just read?

[–]JasonCarswell 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's not worded well.

We've been struggling with trying to discuss coming up with good policy that is not about censoring so much as how to protect, prevent, and prepare for the worst, and the future is infinitely full of hypothetical possible threats.

So thus far the best thing we can come up with is to hope people are more accurate and more specific about their phrases not to unnecessarily attract negative attention, and be vigilant, prepared, and brace for the worst, forever.

[–]magnora7[S] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Here are the rules explaining exactly how free the freedom is: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/j1/the_saiditnet_terms_and_content_policy/

And thankfully here we won't have nearly the brigading problems for 2 reasons: 1. There is no downvote. 2. The pyramid of debate must be respected or someone will be banned.

So if one sub brigades another, and they can't downvote or shitpost, then all that's left is to rationally argue the point they want to make. So the very design of the site makes this type of malicious behavior much more difficult.

In the future we're soon releasing an iOS app in addition to our android app we already have, upgrading our backend server architecture for the sake of the site's longevity, and many other things. It's only me and one other guy working on this whole site, so be patient, but we keep improving this site more and more and don't plan to stop.

We don't plan to have a premium mode, no. But we do plan to release a site-wide cryptocurrency in about a year that can be used for tipping comments and posts that you like. But that's a ways down the road.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

[–]Robin 9 insightful - 3 fun9 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

The existence of alternative media put corporate media in a bind. The more they ban people, the more people will go elsewhere. The less they ban them, the less point in controlling the information flow.

The paradox of authoritarianism grabbing at water with it's iron fist.

Good old reddit here. None of that new design nonsense!

[–]magnora7[S] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Seriously, I hate their redesign so much. It's so non-functional. They basically did it to inject more ads and stuff faked as user content, to drive up profit margins. That's the main reason digg.com did their redesigns too.

[–]Vulphere 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

New reddit is awful, awful in performance, usability, design, and customisation.

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I agree completely. If I was on the team working on the site redesign, I'd probably go to sleep with a headache every single night. It's one of the most bloated and non-functional pieces of software I've ever seen. And the worst part is that it literally only exists for the purpose of making ads look like normal content, and for them to easily hide stuff without others noticing. Then they have some extremely minor feature upgrades (that simply do not require such a massive UI overhaul), and pretend that's really why they're doing it.

Despicable, tbh

Yeah reddit is completely out of control now. Welcome to information freedom, my friend.

[–]iLuvJews 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Since you've created a brand new account, make sure to post/comment nothing else than about needing to ban people talking about the NZ shooting and how it's definitely not a hoax.

lol

Is this really all you do? Do you plan to make posts or comments that aren't just pestering people?

/u/fajangled has made all of one comment and this is the first reply they get. They don't deserve the Voat treatment.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I thought it was hard to ignore 2 years ago tbh, but what they're doing now is just insane. But I knew it would come, they're trapped on a corporate profit-based path, and that only has one result. They're going to go the way of digg.com

[–]JasonCarswell 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Maybe you could add to the canary that you won't sell, much less sell out. Maybe also add that you'd rather let this SaidIt experiment crash than sell out and let the donations/market speak. That's up to you of course, but it'd be reassuring. You might also consider transparently publishing your expenses for SaidIt whatever they may be, redacting what you see fit for security and anonymity, maybe in a locked wiki.

So I've asked Corbett a couple times if he wants his coin back. Again: https://www.corbettreport.com/children-make-perfect-propaganda-props-propagandawatch/#comment-60170 No reply as expected. I also told him back when where I'd spend his gift. I don't have a lot and it's not much, but at least it's for a good cause. Otherwise I'd just by some ketamine (too much bother) or a new hard drive or keep sitting on it.

My Bitcoin Core has caught up. I trust your keys are in order. If not, it will be lost to the Universe. I also have some NameCoin to donate. You can sit on it for a few years like I did until you decide to convert it or actually adopt a ZeroNet address.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, all the addresses we have are up to date for our cryptocurrency donation page, I double-checked them recently. Maybe you can try sending a very small amount and verify if you're worried about it getting lost, I can verify that I received it.

This is of course if you want to donate, which is up to you. I appreciate you thinking of us.

How do i make a new subsaidit?

[–]Farseli 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Accounts need to be at least 2 weeks old before they can, and have to wait 1 week between each one they create.

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

After your account is 2 weeks old, the "create a sub" button will appear next to the "post a link" buttons. Let me know if you have any more questions!

[–]JasonCarswell 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm guessing it explained the 2 weeks thing in the sign up (I've forgotten). It may be good to feature a statement after creating a new sub stating that in one week on xx day at xxx time you may create again. Or a countdown under preferences. Or display but grey out the "create new sub in 168 hours" (= 1 week). (Added to wishlist.)

cc /u/d3rr

[–]Vulphere 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Wait for 2 weeks if your account is still new.

[–]BigSeksy 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

[–]Thymos 6 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 4 fun -  (1 child)

My favorite Reddit app had a doubletap a link/comment to upvote / triple tap to downvote. Something like that would be nice, it's hard to want to vote when it requires a long press and then picking from a menu.

Thanks so much for making this, Reddit needed a free speech alternative and voat was not stepping up to the plate.

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You can vote with swipe left and right

[–]akerro 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Where do I create new sub?

[–]Greedeater 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Gotta wait for two weeks mate.

[–]akerro 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The "create a new sub" button will appear in the top-right after your account is 2 weeks old

[–]DanDinDon 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I checked out both Voat and SaidIt before decide to join here. I pick here because there is no downvote button, unlike Voat which is basically the same as reddit.

[–]Starlight_Fire 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Happy to be here! Thinking about starting a sub or two here that replicates the ones I use on Reddit so that we can build some of those communities here.

Mainly: a small business sub, financial independence/financial help, and possibly a women's sub.

Anyone else thinking of replicating some of their own?

[–]Farseli 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Have to wait 2 weeks before starting a sub, but I'm thinking of making a few once I can.

[–]GENUINE 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (13 children)

I found out about this website today.

Is it going to end up like Voat? I stayed well away from there due to the heavy alt-right presence. It's not so prevalent on Reddit, but definitely becomes repetitive and exhausting on there also.

What's unique about this site?

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

Is it going to end up like Voat?

Nope.

We built this whole site because we hated both reddit and what voat had become. This site even used to be called antiextremes.com for that exact reason. We're dedicated to not following the path either voat nor reddit went down.

Here's what makes saidit unique: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/37r/welcome_to_saiditnet/

Welcome!

[–]GENUINE 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

Thanks.

antiextremes.com

I assume that this means your intention was to avoid anything like Voat or Raddle (the lesser-known, very left Reddit alternative).

But is it ever possible to remain neutral? People aligning with the alt-right often use their "facts not feelings" motto, and usually hide the heavy hatred behind "logical" paragraphs (I'm sure we've all seen the same PewResearch paragraph parroted hundreds of times), and in the times I've seen it occur they're almost always posting/commenting with an agenda, not to discuss.

Even if you don't want it to become overrun by one side, couldn't it potentially do so if a large number of users from that side dominate SaidIt, and end up defining the website's standing?

The two extremes being reddit (leftist, censorship) and voat (extremist right). Raddle is like reddit too. There is no silver bullet, but we are going to try our best.

It's possible, but the ones that don't follow the pyramid of debate would be removed. And it turns out a lot of hyper-extremist people aren't usually all that good at arguing their points. This works in our favor.

I don't think "extreme" is the correct word. Ideological is what I would say. Voat is a cesspool because everything for those people is ideological, same as reddit. Reddit is worse, however, because it is a government and NGO supported propaganda machine.

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Ideological is a good word, I agree. But extremism is defined as "the advocacy of extreme measures or views" and if you're too far-gone in to one single ideology, as voat and reddit both often are, then I see it as ideological extremism.

Yeah, reddit is definitely more... machined, for lack of a better word.

I see "extremism" as a plastic word used to mean more or less what TPTB want it to. Of course, they're good old fashioned middle of the road neoliberal, so any dissent from the "mainstream" is suspect. c.f. https://wikispooks.com/wiki/Extremism

Sentencing a criminal to death is considered "extreme," however, many view it as a necessary measure. The American colonists declaring civil war against the British Empire was also "extreme." America's independence day is one of the largest holidays in the US.

Liberal democracy is considered centrist, despite it being a radically difference form of "civilization" than anything pre-Enlightenment. Under liberal democracy, mass-suffrage is a centrist position and the idea of the state as being what defines a people is centrist. Completely contrary to most of human history -- even democracy in Ancient Greece never went so far.

In a sense I'd argue that extremism is nothing more than going against the fray of the prevailing winds of modern society, which doesn't seem to offer all that much to people except the mercantile class.

I disagree. A whole society can be extreme at once. Look at Nazi Germany for example.

Extremism is more about the historical and global cultural norms, not just bucking the norms of one country at one moment.

[–]Troll 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

First of all, though, we need a working definition of "extreme." Extreme is in regards to something considered commonplace or moderate.

In the commonly accepted definition of political extremism it means radically different from the norms. But historically, again, liberal democracy is an extremist form of government. Nobody in their right mind before 400 years ago would have thought that universal suffrage was ideal or desirable.

I still haven't finished it but this is a general encyclopedic article about SaidIt: https://infogalactic.com/info/SaidIt

double the growth every six months...

7 months later: 22.4k subscribers... So about 5x as many... :)

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Interesting theory! So maybe we are doubling every 4 months when things are going well. I'm excited to see where this site will be in a few years

[–]Many_Coconut 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

yeah, I will to my part to "propagate it". There are many disgruntled Redditors who are looking for an alternative. There are actual subreddits for that. Best place to advertise :)

If we can get to about a million people, with about 100k active users, (users who on average post at least 1 time a week and spend about >15 min a week on the site), this site will be big enough to "last". It will be a real alternative at that point.

And that is what I want. Ideally like 10 million, but you know... Not something to "replace" reddit, i.e., with like 1billion users etc., Cause at that point, it to will be either bought or shut down.

Reddit was way cooler too, before it got too big...

Nice day to you, sir.

Found out about it on a Reddit thread after one person was talking about old reposts. This is interesting...

This post shows "4,501 readers". Is that non-users as well?

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, that includes non users. Where are you seeing that 4501 number, on the app?

[–]Reddit_sucks_dick 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

'4000 subscribed'..why does it say '21,357 readers' on the sidebar?

[–]Tiwaking 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You can browse anonymously. Perhaps anonymous readers who have visited a sub are included in the count.

I've had troubles with my Reddit account since day 1 I made it. I couldn't follow subreddit nor post on them for no apparent reason.

Saidit.net is running quite fine, better than Voat.co did - I've the impression it's now inactive ...

I'm having troubles to see the subcategories using the Brave browser while logged in.
