The buttons need to sit side-by-side to take away the visual hint that there's an upvote and downvote.

I adapted to the current style rather quickly and did not have trouble or confusion that it might be downvote. I'm willing to bet a lot more users adapted too. The only people who might have confusion are new users. They might get used to it in a matter of days. But yeah, you're not wrong. The feeling of up and down/ positive and negative still remains due to our past experience with other platforms. Maybe it could change if we associate more experience with this design.

They also need to be higher resolution. Or maybe an svg that can scale. Honestly they look cheap.

Saidit doesn't have upvote vs downvote, but instead two types of upvotes: An "Insightful" vote which has a lightbulb icon, and a "Fun" vote which is a laughing icon. You can vote both of them if it's both funny and insightful, and that will give it the most points and increase its ranking. This two-upvote system gets rid of upvote vs downvote wars, and people downvoting others to censor them.

I just wanted to say, if downvoting just causes a topic to be ignored by people, because it vanishes due to downvoting, it does not use anything at all. If you do not like something so much that you can not ignore it, you should use the discussion feature, lol.
