I have always had a fascination with the age of exploration, and so the TV series The Terror caught my eye on Amazon. It follows the stories and fates of the crews of two ships trying to find their way through the northwest passage in the mid 1800s, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror.
The title is a double entendre in that while this is the name of one of the boats, there is also a creeping sense of terror as the journey goes on and things begin to unravel. And this is the genius of the show, the inevitability of the end result keeps you wound up as the crew faces terror from the situation, their fellow crew members, the hostile environment, and something lurking out there at the edge of the fog.
The story is full of rich and well developed characters who all have pretty well rounded out arcs by the end of the season. There are a number of familiar faces in the cast, namely Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies, and Ciarán Hinds.
While at times it’s obvious that things were filmed on a set, and the CGI thing in the fog looks woefully bad, these are minor things that don’t take away from an excellent story filled with a variety of engaging characters. All ten episodes are on Amazon, and its definitely worth watching.
