For anything in life not just this. Only apologize if you fucked up. Never apologize for failing to put up with someone's bullshit. Especially if they are demanding it. It's a power game. It's a sign this person is unstable and you should stay away. And by refusing to take a submissive position you'll potentially lose "friends" but friends in name only. What it really does is signals to the crazy people that you won't be bullied and they'll avoid you in the future.

Even that's not true- it's a remainder from the time when "just punch the bully out and show him you won't take it, he'll find a weaker victim!" was the truth, and not the real "you punch the bully out and you lose, he'll KNOW he can kick your ass whenever he wants and he'll NEVER STOP. You punch the bully out and you win, he'll call all his friends, his friends will get some baseball bats or worse, they'll get enough people against you the greatest fighter couldn't fight his way out of it, and they'll put you in the hospital."

The crazy people won't avoid you if you won't play ball- they'll just go to all the people who DO play ball and tell them to shun you/help them harass/bully you or else the crazies will do it all to that person too.

It's a win, until you realize that the only reason the crazy people are winning is NOT because people think they're right, but rather because they're crazy.

Normal people don't take minor slights/disagreements/not bowing down to you too personally. They'll get mad at you, but within an hour or two they'll forget about it and go about their day, and they'll only fight battles if they're serious enough you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO ...and oftentimes, not even then, since most of the illegal/immoral bullshit companies can get away with is because people realize "I just have to accept that I can't afford justice. If I fight this, I'll get fired/blackballed from working and I'm not rich enough to keep fighting- the company can afford to draw it out until I just can't afford to keep paying my legal fees and I have no choice but to drop the lawsuit."

The crazy people don't think that way. They're crazy enough to take the smallest slight as one of those battles you absolutely have to fight. They're narcissistic enough that they truly believe that you thinking their stick figure drawing of their favorite anime character as fat, black, and trans wasn't very good is the single greatest civil rights battle of our time, and when they vanquish you, they cannot possibly fathom that they won't erect statues of them and name high schools after them for this battle. They're terminally online enough that they're not just telling their crazy friends and spineless slaves to leave you alone- they'll complain to your boss, or your boss's boss, or THEIR boss's boss, and keep going up the line until they get to someone on the board of directors who doesn't know you from Adam and will respond to their demands with "shutupshutupshutupdon'tcaredon'tcareOH MY GOD I DON'T CARE just fire whatever peasant they're bitching about just to shut them up before their whining affects the stock prices and we lose money over this shit"- and they're evil enough to know that normal people can't afford justice and they have to let the evil take power because the only other option is losing everything, so the average person will then say "sure, you can have his head on a platter as long as you spare me."

Yeah. It's a blessing and a curse. You'll live rent free in their head for it, but at the same time if you make it clear they can't hurt you, they will make it their personal mission- and moreso, treat it as if it's a mission from God that they were put on earth solely to complete this task- to FIND someone in your life who CAN hurt you and get them to hurt you in turn.
