I mean, on the one hand, I can kind of understand this--I'm not at all fond of spiders myself--but it's still rather silly. Anyone aware of HP should know by now that big-ass spiders are a thing, and get their shit together accordingly.

They’d shit themselves over Shelob or Ungoliant.

I think there are other games that do this and things like “story mode” which reduce the challenge to zero (nicknamed “journalist mode” after one reviewer, Dean Takahashi, couldn’t get past the movement tutorial on Cuphead). I think it’s because there’s a generation of people that can’t accept that not everything has to made to cater to everyone and if what’s stopping them playing a game is their fear of spiders then onus shouldn’t be on them to get over their fear but on the game devs to alter the game. This flies in the face of CBT and exposure therapy and is actually building fragility into people.

By catering to these whiny people, you’re actually doing them zero favours and making it harder for them to cope with the world.

Oh and journalist mode is both funny and just about the lamest thing ever.

Well said. This whole thing, as you said, is building fragility into people.

It’s Jonathan Haidt’s observation, he thinks that schools and universities are actually running a programme of reverse cognitive behaviour therapy on young people that instils a level of fragility and inability to cope that we have never seen before, and that this added to the damage done by by helicopter parenting, the creation of young people with immense entitlement issues and learned helplessness, gives us the current situation we find ourselves in.

There was a thalassophobia mode added to Horizon Forbidden West recently, for people with a fear of deep bodies of water.

It sounds pretty ridiculous.

A lot of games do this actually, I don't know of any other phobia that is catered to like this.
