Not necessarily. It depends. Threatening to committ suicide for attention absolutely is a narcissistic act I have little simpathy for. But other times it can be simply an act of total desperation due to extreme circumstances or ongoing depression and isn't something the person is doing due to narcissistic impulses or a cry for attention. It still absolutely harms those who remain but it's a pretty thorny problem.

If you've never been in that kind of situation where you are under such incredible stress and you don't see an escape from it besides death it can be hard to understand that mindset. But I think it's a lot like if you are say, in a tall burning building and you have the choice of either staying and being burned alive, or jumping out and taking your chances with gravity. Either way it's a near certain death. People who are suicidal often view things in that manner, death is a solution to a problem they see no other escapes from. Though as with many of these things the person under extreme stress may be imagining the fire so to speak.

That said pray you never have to experience that kind of hopeless desperation that would make you even consider it, it changes you even if you do ultimately choose life and make it out the other side.
