As I sit here, metaphorically thumbing through today's news, I can't even muster any schadenfraude over being "right" about Biden.
Never mind his age, and physical fitness, this man is, and has always been unfit to serve in an executive capacity.
This administration has lurched from crisis to crisis, always a day late and a dollar short, leaving large swaths of the population to deal with things on their own. Not only that. There is no consistency to their philosophy of governing, so that activists know where to direct their energy. Statistically, there should have been one or two big things that swung their way, but nope.
Until his selection as VP under Obama, Biden had no experience in an executive role. His entire career was in the Senate in an era where cutting deals and throwing money at the problem were the ways to "get things done". No need to work out the logistics---just pass a law and a budget and let the executive departments work it out. His propensity to grift off his office (see: Hunter Biden, Ukraine, China and Jim Biden), and his history of lack of respect for women (see: Tara Reade, Anita Hill and the Chris Dodd "waitress sandwich"), and for voters in general (see: lyin' dog-faced pony soldier, listen fat and pushup contest) does not help.
It does not help that there has been decades of crumbling physical infrastructure, predatory capitalism and the hollowing out of qualified government employees.
But, these are no excuse for the utter inattention to any problem until it reaches crisis proportions, followed by inadequate, symbolic responses and a return to politicking on issues as if everything is humming along on the "normal" setting.
From health care, to housing, to employment, to food safety, to fuel costs, to transportation issues, to threats to the food supply, to weather-related suffering, to power grid issues, to war profiteering, to police violence against citizens, to citizen violence against other citizens, to immigration...and on and on and on...there is an utter lack of attention to brewing problems and a complete lack of imagination in getting them addressed.
The administration's wants to wear it's "strong executive" hat on issues Biden wants, but is spectacularly hands off when Biden doesn't want.
The script is the same, every time. Throw money at it. Put up a website. Issue a press release about an "all of government response". Use emergency measures only when a problem is too big to ignore. Change the subject.
They didn't see the port shipping chaos coming. They didn't see the baby formula shortage coming. They didn't see the excess mortality and birth rate drops coming. They weren't prepared for the Dobbs decision, even though it was leaked in advance. They fiddle while air traffic is in chaos. They keep releasing petroleum from the strategic reserve, even as we are being warned that they are getting low and are allowing them to go to Europe.
Meanwhile, insurance companies have nowhere to run from excess mortality claims and massive amounts of property claims from weather. Not only are our crops suffering disruptions from weather and a lack of fertilizer due to high petroleum costs, but the processing plants are also suffering disruptions. Truckers are retiring from the business, as are teachers, nurses, and airline pilots. Necessary parts are expensive, in short supply, or both.
We deserve better.
