Engage them with something better. Simple as that. Except parents don't want to waste thier own time playing with or raising thier kids. That is why we have clown world.

Kids spend a lot more time interacting socially over games now days. Games are the playing field, that the baseball sandlot was to kids decades ago. Kids weren't addicted to baseball, they just liked to hang out and do stuff together.

I simply play Minecraft with my kid, rather than being overbearing.

There's a lot less educationally developmental things you can be doing with a computer as a child than playing minecraft. And the concept of "video game addiction" is controversial in psychology circles, I believe.

But certainly you need to send your kids outside to play once in a while, or read a book. After chores is good psychology. One hours' screen time on a school night is probably enough, unless they're doing homework.

What's controversial about video game addiction? You get addicted to dopamine hits same as gambling addiction or social media addiction. If you are doing something all the time to the detriment of your life, it's an addiction.

What's controversial about video game addiction?

Addiction in neuropsychopharmacology is measured by the chemical change in the addict's body that produces the dependence on the addicted substance.

It doesn't make sense wrt things that aren't pharmacologically active substances. Here's a scholarly paper making the point:

Problems with the Concept of Video Game “Addiction”: Some Case Study Examples

If you are doing something all the time to the detriment of your life, it's an addiction.

Not under current clinical diagnostic criteria. If you were looking for a diagnosis you'd need to go to obsessive/compulsive disorders.

Having said that the DSM V does have one behavioural addiction: Gambling. So maybe we'll see others in the future. At the moment though, it's controversial.

Kids love the freedom they get on Minecraft

This. This is the key. There is no freedom on this PRISON PLANET, so it's to be expected that if kids are presented with ANYTHING that affords them either actual freedom or the feeling of freedom, or even the illusion of freedom, they are going to get hooked. This should be obvious.
