It was a weird time in film. Spielberg directed the Last Crusade which is a pretty good film but when you think about it what actually occurs is the confirmation of the actual divinity of Christ. I can't even think of one Hollywood film outside of Passion Of The Christ in the last few decades which does that.

Of course there's the wicked Nazi angle -- why didn't the lovely blonde from that film work more? -- and he also inserts a Nazi/Arab collaboration angle but aside from that it's basically an explicitly pro-Christian film.
