How would logic apply to historical revolutionary movements like the Nazi's,Bolsheviks, Maoists etc? They didn't hold the/many levers of power and took powers in a large part due to people buying into their ideas?

This logic doesn't apply to the Nazis. Bolsheviks were nowhere near as popular as the Nazis were but they were highly organised and efficient military. Not sure about the Maoists.

The people we're referring to didn't win a revolution to overthrow a state, at least in a comparable manner, so it's an apples to oranges situation.
