AR-15. It's lighter, which means you can carry more stuff other than your rifle.

Also, this blog post is pretty wildly out of date. PSA AR-15s are now down in the $450 rang, and there are significantly lighter AR-15 builds than 8.5 lbs, and that isn't counting skeletonized raceguns.

A lot of it depends on where you are.

In the united states/north america, the AR-15 is hands down the platform you want when SHTF. The way the DI system works on the AR allows it to blow must gross stuff inside the system out of it (gas tube fills hollow in bolt carrier to unlock bolt) assuming it even gets in the very highly sealed off system to begin with. More importantly, I'd argue, is the ability to find parts/ammo basically EVERYWHERE, since it's the most popular rifle in the united states.

For eastern europe/the rest of the world, you're gonna want to find an AK, but be careful since parts arent exactly compatible between platforms. Specifically you want an AK-74, because most warsaw pact countries have switched over to the 5.45 as opposed to the old 7.62.

If we’re talking real SHTF and we’re forming up, AR because of parts availability and it’s easier to replace components, e.g. just slap a new upper on.

AR modularity, lighter, lighter ammo, can rebuild it AK pretty hard to kill, but if you do...its fucked.

I got a gucci AK and a gucci AR. I'd probably reach for the AR if I had to pick one.

The prices are way off. I haven't seen an AK sell for less than $600 in a decade, while AR's can easily be bought in the $400 range, and built in the $300 range.
