I use an Aquasana, it's really well rated and cost us only about $200 with the "Water for life" program which is a subscription for replacement filters coming in the mail every 6 months. I really like it.

EDIT: this is the one I got, it's been a few years so the price has increased to $300...

I bought a 5-stage RO kit from Amazon that is less than $200 that mounts under the sink. You need to have a way to mount the spigot above the sink or countertop, so putting one in an apartment may not be the best idea. 3 years worth of filters for another $100.

This is what I got. The hoses and connectors are color coded so it's super easy to put together. And it's on sale right now. 3-years worth of replacement filters for $88.
