Reboot if you haven't tried it, you can also try uninstalling the contacts app from the play store and reinstalling it.

What type of android is it? Someone might have experienced this before and found a fix.

If all else fails you can try using a different contacts app (I had to recently change messaging apps bc of a bug) or do a factory reset.

Yes. I have found that sometimes updates can cause issues until I restart it twice after the update.

Worst case, do a factory reset. If it's standard Android, your accounts will be backed up to the cloud and will be reloaded onto your phone during the setup.
