Ferdinand von Schill (6 January 1776 – 31 May 1809) was a Prussian major who raised freikorps in revolt against Imperial French Domination over Germany. The rebellion would eventually succumb to Napoleonic forces at the Battle of Stralsund, which also saw Schill's own death in action. Afterwards, over five hundred of Schill's men were imprisoned, while eleven of Schill's officers were executed. By the 1830s Schill was widely considered a hero. Monuments in his honour were be erected in Wesel, Stralsund, Braunschweig, Wilmersdorf, Potsdam, Ohlau, Cottbus, Anklam, Geldern and Wittenberg, and several military units were named after him.
