Disbanding some units probably would have had some small effect, but the increase must be largely due to the rioting and high tensions that are going on.

You don't see the cause and effect relationship on display here? You're going to claim with no proof, an alternative explanation that you made up yourself?

It's kinda hilarious that the article you cite is only pointing out correlation, not causation, yet you go off on another user because their cause-and-effect hypothesis doesn't agree with your cause-and-effect hypothesis.

How about you show me your proof that this is due to the unit disbanding first.

Stay with me here: anti-crime units disbanded. Crime skyrockets. Huh, any causation there? No, must be something else!

YOU present evidence of the conspiracy theory.

So... no evidence whatsoever. Why am I not surprised?

Let's see what makes more sense:
1. criminals are spending all of their time closely following the status of random government agencies so that they can all get together and agree to start shooting people after one small agency is disbanded
OR
2. There have been high-profile, high-tension protests going on for weeks, so violence has been higher recently.

I wonder what would happen if we compare the shootings this week with the shooting numbers earlier this month, instead of with shooting numbers from last year. Source

How about that! 40 shootings per week for the first three weeks of this month.

How does it feel to be proven completely wrong, and caught in your fearmongering, pro-cop propaganda?

What makes more sense: A cop unit tasked with stopping specfic type of crime is disbanded at the demand of anti-cop protesters. That kind of crime then skyrockets.

  1. There have been high-profile, high-tension protests going on for weeks, so violence has been higher recently.

I don't follow. Why would violence be higher recently? Police have been scaling back their efforts, and police are the primary cause of violence. So the violence should be greatly decreasing, not increasing. You're arguing against yourself, and losing.

Violence is highly seasonal, and can be directly correlated to things like the outside temperature. That's why crime is compared to what happened the previous year. This is well-known; you're telling me this is news to you?

These are the same NYC cops who, when everyone was running away from the flaming World Trade Center, ran towards it. Why am I not surprised they're being shit on?

There's so much crazy here I almost don't know where to start.

police are the primary cause of violence

This is you putting words in my mouth.

Police have been scaling back their efforts

This is completely incorrect, as the complete sham of the police budget "reductions" over the past couple of days show.

Violence is highly seasonal, and can be directly correlated to things like the outside temperature. That's why crime is compared to what happened the previous year. This is well-known; you're telling me this is news to you?

And I'm the conspiracy theorist. Also, I thought the rise in violent crime was due to the disbanding of the anti-crime units? yOu'Re aRgUiNg AgAiNsT yOuRsElF, aNd LoSiNg.

These are the same NYC cops who, when everyone was running away from the flaming World Trade Center, ran towards it.

Yay, they did their jobs once.

Why am I not surprised they're being shit on?

Because you're aware of how militarization of police and police brutality have gotten to the breaking point, so you're rightfully shitting on them along with every other reasonable person?

Your propaganda isn't gonna work here bub. Your arguments are as transparent as your motives.

This is incredibly misleading. There is a 358% "surge" over the exact same time period from last year, but this is perfectly consistent with the increase in shootings over the past few weeks (Source), since, y'know, we have massive unrest leading to an increase in violence.

This has nothing to do with anti-crime units disbanding, and misleading fearmongering like this is the OPPOSITE of what we should be promoting on /s/news. Be better OP.

FIFTY FIVE people shot in a week. In a first world country.

Honestly I don't care what the situation is like, this is why the rest of the world thinks your gun laws are fucking stupid.

[–]Dr_Bukkake 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Well here’s a thought, most of these shootings are by people who aren’t even allowed to have guns and got them illegally. Most law abiding gun owning citizens will go their whole lives never shooting anybody, but guess who don’t care much about laws? The people doing the shootings.

[–]Chipit[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Don't bother - the rest of the world is resentful and angry at America because they only ever hear bad news.

Most of them are not properly educated on how much they depend on the US. The US is almost exclusively depicted in a negative way and blamed for stuff, while the US is almost never depicted in a positive way and given its due credit. A lot of them directly link their view of their own individual countries to their view of the US as a point of contrast. Because they see things along those lines, and because they want to depict themselves as being superior to the US, they must as a matter of necessity see the US in an unrealistically negative way.

A lot of hate they have for the US is not only a product of their ignorance of their dependence on the US, it's also because of their dependence on the US. They take the US for granted and many of those that are aware of their dependence on the US still hate the US because playing second fiddle to the US stings their pride.

I like how they come to an American site to spew their American hate.

Always! I never understood it until a few years ago an insightful gentleman sat me down and explained that there are people out there who are just not happy unless they are unhappy, or better yet they are spreading their unhappiness to others. That's how they get fulfillment out of life and that's what they like to do. Once I got it suddenly things made a great deal more sense.

If they actually hated us, they'd avoid using our sites. But they're not interested in that - they want to spread unhappiness. And if that sounds small, petty, and pathetic to you - you're absolutely right. But that's the world we live in. We were better off being disconnected from one another and living in our own countries.

55 shootings, 74 wounded. Didnt say anyone was killed. Id be curious to see what the stats were in the weeks leading up to them disbanding the unit. 2020 has been a very different year than 2019.

[–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I thought America wasn't a first world country? Didn't you revoke our status quite some time ago? We're not civilized, we're a barbaric shithole third world country that you would never set foot in?

So did you just pretend that didn't happen and re-promote us to first world status just so you could take a big shit on us again?

This kind of garbage is why nobody in America cares, or even cares to know, what the rest of the world thinks. "Hey I'm from a country you need to zoom in to notice, with population of few million, and I know all about USA but ignorant Americans don't know anything about me!" It's like getting offended Drake doesn't know about you even though you know about him.

Oh hey yeah, or maybe there's more than one person on the entire internet and they don't agree on everything like that.

Also this

Also great example of a celebrity, the guy who's more famous for being a meme than whatever he thinks he's actually famous for, that people must bump into on the street daily and have no fucking clue who he is.

Really? Are shooting by policemen up too?
