We had a local police dog get shot in the line of duty about a year ago. The cops beat the living shit out of the perp as he resisted arrest.

Resisting arrest is a common excuse for cops beating the shit out of people. I really don't like this because police dogs are trained to attack, and if I had a German Shepard attack me I might have to kill it in self defense, but it's a police dog and considered an officer when its convenient for the police.

A lot of them aren't very well trained either, and still used as an excuse for illegal searches.

Fuck police dogs. They are used for a lot of gross misused of government power. Dogs should not be used for policing.
